Some of you may remember my 1 owner 67 442.
These photos represent 85% completion . The interior is going in this week .
I would be grateful for any input you may have . Chassis and mechanicals are done and complete . Engine has been totally rebuilt to stock specifications , as has the transmission . Anyway , let the observations begin. Thanks , Jim

Jim, car looks good. I really appreciate stock restorations.
Since you asked for observations, I'll make a couple.
1. I am not sure what color the filler cap for oil is supposed to be. I thought engine color, but I could be very wrong.
2. Your cowl tag calls for a late October build, and you have the later model 67 442 automatic air cleaner. I am not sure when they went into production. My late May car has one. The earlier one had a snorkel, and the stick shift was open element. I prefer the later model, and I totally support you keeping that one on there even IF it got implemented later than October, which I am not sure of. I think the later model cleaner looks better and flows better anyway, and it's probably correct anyhow. Is it the original to the car?
3. Could you comment about the heavy duty cooling package? I was under the impression that all AC cars got it, which is like 6 blade fan and clutch. I think mine has a 4 blade. Is your fan 6 blade and I think I see a clutch there? Are you running a fan shroud and did it have one to begin with? So, I'm just befuddled on that one.
4. I like the exhaust. Gardner?
5. Who's engine paint is that? Looks spot on in the natural light pics and red in the flash pics, looks good either way.

I bought this 442 on March 6th of this year , and these are the first pictures
I have seen of it ...... I have really mixed emotions on it . Received pictures on Wednesday , and am still processing .
First , I have to thank this Forum . Left to my own devices , It would have had aftermarket rear springs that would have lifted it 2 " . It would have also had a set of Diamondback radials on BFG TA Casings with either gold or blue stripes . I also would have gone with a set of " Poverty ( dog dish ) caps. Several very knowledgeable members have told me to keep it EXACTLY as it came , and states on the O.E. Window Sticker , and Cowl Tag . For that I'm well pleased . I also want to thank " lemoldsnut " for a specific stainless trim piece . My windshield should be perfectly framed .
My original trim seemed to have been in the same hail storm that the roof suffered from .
Koda , second observation I have had on Air Cleaner . If it means anything , this car was sold Feb . 6th , 1967 @ Bradley Old's in Tulsa Oklahoma , it did not appear that any original items were modified or changed . Unless the dealership had a similar car in inventory and they changed one for the other to satisfy a customer .
Oil cap , that is the color it came with , I can change it if someone can tell me what it should be . Yep , it is a 6 blade , just cleaned , and the fan clutch operation is fine . O.E. shroud is there , original radiator restored and re-cored .
Gardner Exhaust , Eric was a pleasure to deal with . For any stock application , there is simply nothing better .

My parts total alone is reported @ $ 22,000 . The engine and Transmisson have approx . $ 10,000 into them , 4K in parts and 6K in labor .

I'm not a fan of trailer queens . This will be right on the edge of this territory . I love this car , but it might not be the one for me .
Last Friday I went over to Barrett Jackson's office to see if I could secure a spot in their Jan 2014 auction in Scottsdale .

A car can be nice and be driven. Drive it, show it off, and just keep on it. Theres nothing saying you cant fix what paint burns off or gets chipped.
Why not be the guy that enjoys it. No one lives forever, and whose to say the next guys going to trailer it?

Well , I made it to the Major Build chapter .
I can NOT believe all of the good , bad , and indifferent news on my build today . First , this is what I need a source , or part supplier for .
67 Olds Cutlass 442 , 6 bladed , H.D Cooling , Thermal Fan Clutch . I'm wondering where I might be able to source . Mine Wobbles ..
Second , I was considering my good fortune of having 2 of my favorite members rroth01 , and TK-65 commenting on my car . Calvin of Calvin's Customs in Salina KS commented to me earlier in the week . " Now that the rest of the car looks so good , we really have to do something about the dash ." SO , out of the blue , Calvin ( restorer ) calls me this AM to tell me my finish and delivery time are out the window !! Seems the pot metal restoration facility in Bakersfield CA has failed twice on getting my 9 pieces to stay electrostatically adhered to . My finish time is out the window .
67 , 442 , DASH needs , the heck with it P.M. Ron Roth . Had a nice conversation with Ron this evening . He is exactly who I need there .
Now I just got to convince my restorer that R+R ing the dash will make everybody much happier .. Ha Ha . There is a lesson here , I will let the
pictures tell my story as it happens .
The final was TK-65 . I'm a big fan of his perspective . Just put some leaded premium in both of your veins , finish it , drive it , enjoy it .....

If you have any questions on Ron,s work my pic below should help your decision Ron does great work as you can see. Im not big on emails so most of our communications were done by phone Ron,s a graet guy and he loves to make sure you are happy with the finish product. My IP was done over a year ago and i just about ready to reinstall it.

Small piece of information on Ron's services . He indicates that the last several days , his phone and requests for product have risen quickly.
I'm getting funds there as soon as possible . And #2. I'm really glad that my restoration shop had a chance to interact with Ron . There is a time and place for going with the specialists in certain specific target areas .
Professional wiring and dash from the surface to the harness is tedious and easily overlooked . My final product is going to benefit tremendously .

Restoration Shop Hell is right next to Body Shop Hell .
There must be some sort of fractional percentage of costing , twice as much , and taking twice as long . First , let me say that Ron Roth is saving me from Dash , Under hood , Fuse Box , Harness , Finishing ,
complete embarrassment .
Just discovering in the last 5 days that my dash harness , was in a failing state , put me into a deeper discussion with my shop owner Calvin of Calvins Customs . This morning , I'm looking at my cowl tag picture , and look at that idiotic , black taped excuse for an engine harness , that jumps right out at me . Not good .
So here is my current position . Ron has my funds , and is ready to NOW,
completely restore my ENTIRE DASH , new Main Dash Harness , and has supplied me with source for O.E. harnesses for EVERY WIRING HARNESS remaining front to back in the car . NOW , I have to talk my restoration shop into taking the time to accomplish the labor portion of this task . I've emailed and called since last Friday , now reply yet .
So here is the take away . Mr. Roth will restore your 66 - 67 Cutlass dash to perfection . IF , you take the time to evaluate how your 46 YR. old wiring harness's look , he has source for every wiring harness in your car.
My job is to CONVINCE my guy Calvin , that everybody will be miles ahead with all new wiring in my car !!!!!!!!!
So , if this all goes according to my plan , Calvin packs up my dash tomorrow AM . Sends to Ron . Ron has a core ready for reassembly .
Ron dash and new wiring harness goes together . 6 new wiring harness's
get sent from American Auto Wire to Calvin Customs in KS. 6 Harness's

Merry Christmas to ME .
Well , all of my parties are on board . Calvin , my restorer , is removing and shipping my entire dash to Ron in Michigan . Talked to Ron this AM , and he is driving to Cleveland ( ? ) for work , and will start on my dash by end of this week . One of the huge benefits of working with professionals , is that Ron is installing the dash wiring harness at the same time . At the same time the fuse box will be replaced or made as new .
Because of Ron's sources , all of the rest of my wiring harness's will be replaced . 47 year old wiring , connectors , and sockets are exactly what they are . So , from back to front : Dash and clock harness . Rear Body and Back up lamp . Air Conditioning . Engine . Front Light . Courtesy Light . And,
Console ... All will have new harness's .
These will connect to a completely restored dash . NOW , I'm completely
convinced that any restoration needs to have several specialists calm an
( fill in the blank ) impulsive absentee owner out of unrealistic time and cost restraints .
I should have before and after detail pictures hopefully by the end of this month .... Plus a final order from Fusick's , and maybe that should be it ...
As stated previously , the people and professionalism on this forum really
makes a difference . Thanks to all that have contributed .. JT .

Geez : It has only been a year .
This update is a request for 2 pieces I may need to finish this car . To make a very long story short , a pot metal restorer has caused me to be seeking 2 trim pieces .
#1 . Lower Trunk trim piece .
#2 . Driver Side ( left side I presume ) trim piece that fits between left rear wheel opening trim and lower body trim piece . My understanding is that this piece is about 3 " x 4 " ...
I will be posting this request in the Parts Wanted section . Thanks for any assistance in helping direct me .. Jim .

The 442 has been in my garage since Fri. morning .
My car seems really , really nice to me . None of this means anything until I
post pictures . Coming next week .
Thanks to Ron Roth , Lemonoldsnut , Run to Rund , wr1970 , everything I have bought from you guys has been better than I could ever have imagined . This 442 , is better than new in many ways .
When Passport Transport dropped off the car Friday , the driver noticed that my R.R. Wheel Cylinder was leaking . As well as the L.F. Wheel cylinder .
Hence , I've driven the car 1.3 miles .
I'm now booking my 442 into my favorite Hot Rod shop to do a full day of
final detailing . Anyway , next week more pictures . I will try for quality and detailed images , because I really value ALL the feedback .

Vinyl Top
Hello:
Beautiful Work! It appears you are going with a vinyl top if I see correctly. I could not see any clips or fasteners on the body for the chrome. My question is, what are you using for mounting hardware and the 4 chrome pieces around the rear window area. I ask because I am doing basically the same level restoration on my 66 Cutlass, the finished car will Triple Black but NO vinyl top, I want to use the vinyl top chrome pieces as accents on the body to help break up the all Black look. I have found repop clips / hdw and chrome pieces in catalogs and was wondering if that was the route you were going to use.

. My car is finally in a place where the final steps are being taken ..
First , I want to thank - in no particular order .
Ron Roth , Run to Rund , Lemonoldsnut , WR1970 , Tfatboy , and the many that have advised me . The aforementioned have sold me beautiful original parts , and 2 of them took parts OFF of THEIR own cars to get me really nice pieces .. This forum really goes above and beyond .
Second . I have made some exceptionally bad choices from the moment I purchased my blank canvas - still in the original owners name - real window sticker , Protect - O - Plate , dealer invoice , loan documents , ETC car.
My initial assessment was clouded . I should have asked questions like this : Should I build this car , OR would someone else be better suited to the job ? Would someone else like to buy this before I start building it ?
I was not seeing clearly into what a full frame off body restoration would involve for DOLLARS and TIME . Did I realize that in Corvette World - Dollars and cents , a NCRS car begins at 100,000 for restore , and a Bloomington Gold car is 150,000 .. ... That is what it takes when you decide to go all in . AND , my builder is great on Street Rods and Customs , BUT , perhaps not so much on perfect O.E. 67 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe 442's .
So I hope that in 30 days , I will have finished pictures . LOL . Tomorrow , I will be picking up some NOS R-12 Freon . AND , I will be insuring my 442 will be a perfect driver . I'm frightened to throw out the dollar figure I have in this car . AND , I see the light at the end of my tunnel !
So I thought I would just catch up . I have really enjoyed the people part of this experience . I so highly value the Costpenn and Jensen Racing , W-30 builds , the Gary Godon build and auction experience , Strits and 442 Fred , all ,amazing individuals . It is going to be really fun when this thing is as close to done as I can get it !!

Did I realize that in Corvette World - Dollars and cents , a NCRS car begins at 100,000 for restore , and a Bloomington Gold car is 150,000 .. ... That is what it takes when you decide to go all in . AND , my builder is great on Street Rods and Customs , BUT , perhaps not so much on perfect O.E. 67 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe 442's .
So I hope that in 30 days , I will have finished pictures . LOL . Tomorrow , I will be picking up some NOS R-12 Freon . AND , I will be insuring my 442 will be a perfect driver . I'm frightened to throw out the dollar figure I have in this car . AND , I see the light at the end of my tunnel !
So I thought I would just catch up . I have really enjoyed the people part of this experience . I so highly value the Costpenn and Jensen Racing , W-30 builds , the Gary Godon build and auction experience , Strits and 442 Fred , all ,amazing individuals . It is going to be really fun when this thing is as close to done as I can get it !!
