Post 1968 Cutlass S Convertible

Hey all,

This is my first post on classicoldsmobile. I am a 19 year old student attending Western Michigan University(Kalamazoo, MI) studying Civil Engineering. I'm origionally from Chicago and have just recently purchased a 1968 Cutlass S Convertable. Im hooked on old schools last summer i had a '75 Corvette Stingray, restored the interior and got bored with it so i sold it and bought this Cutlass.

1968 Cutlass S Convertable, all orgional car with a numbers matching rocket 350. I bought the car from a guy for $2,300! The car has not been registered since 1981 and has a little over 35,000 miles(only reads 5 digits however). Starts right up when you throw some gas into the carb and idles runs smoothly. We believe it has a leaking break line somewhere because the system is empty but who knows until we run though everything. Emergercy break works perfectly which is what we used when towing for about a mile to storage. Frame is in perfect condition, rust in the quarters, drivers floor pan, and trunk pan but nothing outstanding. Its also missing the convt top but all hardware present and the hydraulics work so I cant complain.

I do not have an unlimited budget on this thing due to the fact I am a full time Engineering student and have no time to keep a job. But I plan on throwing around a grand into the car to get things going and see where that gets me. First off working on the rust then, interior, new convt top, etc.

What do you guys think? I dont know much about this car any random information will be helpful.

Thanks,
Mitch

Welcome to the site. For a car that been sitting that long I would replace all the brake parts. It doesn't matter how fast the car is if you can't stop it.

I would go threw the car pretty good. Things that are rubber will more than likely need to be replaced.

Take the gas tank off drain it and clean it. Check the lines good chance they will need to be replaced.

Wiring needs to be looked at make sure its good no splices, no bare wire, no broke wire, get a bottle of contact cleaner. A lot of the contacts will need to be cleaned.

Check the line along the frame under the driver door area. Mine sat for ~18 yrs and this was where the line rotted. The line being clipped to the convertible frame's angled 'box' plate makes a perfect area for catching/keeping dirt/wet/etc and rotting...

Definitely redo the brakes. If you know how to weld then you can probably easily fix the rust. Other than that you might want to get a generic interior kit to redo the seats. $1000 won't go far, but you could definitely freshen it up with that money.

Mitch: Welcome to CO! Looks as if you got a steal on the '68 at that price! One thing about restoring, you never, ever, really finish. There's always something.................hang in there, you'll get it done!
