Rocket SS build

Here are some pics of my current build.

Stats:
85 Monte carlo SS
350 olds
70 block
#8 heads (not sure what the cut on them was but my engine builder said it was the second time they were cut.
forged pistons .030
10.1:1
performer rpm intake
comp cam xtreme energy 42-221-4
flow kooler water pump
Stock Grand National electric fan.
carter fuel pump
performer 600 carb (i already had it from the stock 305)
DUI distributor with Livewire wires, autolite platinum plugs
headman headers
pypes 2.5 w/ violator muffs
200-4R trans with derale extrernal cooler

i bought an 81 cutlass parts car in 04 for $400. had a 0 mile rebuild olds 350. from what the guy i bought it from told me is the kid who sold it to him (he bought for the GN rear) was planning on running No2. dunno, didnt care too much at the time. the cars was used for parts over the years. my hurst got the bumpercovers during its resto (i had to buy another front bumper cover when it got hit in 2012 and the header panel ended up on it too ) about a year ago my dad decided he wanted the car out off his lot because hes scaling back the business so i sold the drivers door to an 86 442, the passenger door when to an 86 salon, the frame went under an 87 GN and I decide to put the engine in my Monte SS. I made a good profit on my initial $400.

Count me in. I'll be looking forward to your progress and I want to see that crusty power plant run.

the engine looked so bad because it sat untouched for 10 years but on a fresh rebuild. those chrome valve covers turned to crap. i had my guy check it out and reassemble for piece of mind but when i got it, it had 0 miles.

i bought my first house in july so i'm in the middle of the two things. we will probably be firing it up in feb.

10.1:1 is a dang exact compression ratio number for not knowing how much the heads have been cut.

I'M not sure what the they were cut total. he knows thou. I trust his work. does all the engines for the circle track guys around. He did a 425 olds for the dad from OCC. And i believe he did an olds for a builder that was restoring a car for bill goldberg. hes one of those old school type guys, knows everything. This wasnt a full blueprint build, it was more check and see what deterioated over the years it sat and replace what needs replaced and reassemble( notice he had to replace only one valve). he made a specfic point to check what the compression was gonna be because he picked a cam based on what my driving habits were gonna be for the car. he additionally cut them .010. I'm not gonna pretend to know more about engines than that lol.

X2 lol!

Sorry to break this to you, but you're not making 300rwhp with that mild of a cam and a 600cfm carb.
He may be good builder but he's a bit lacking in the cam choice dept. Sorry.
And #8 heads are typically about 79-80cc out of the box. He'd have to have cut about .060-.080 off of them in order to get to your guesstimated 10.0:1. I'd ask if I were you.

I was curious about that cam so I looked up the specs:

comp cam xtreme energy 42-221-4
Valve lift: 0.453 int./0.456 exh.
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 212 int./218 exh.
Advertised Duration: 256 int./268 exh.

That is a fairly mild cam. Seems it may be a bit small for true 10.1:1 compression ratio and may ping like crazy without high octane fuel.

well regardless, i wasnt given any guarentees about power and i didnt ask to have a definite horsepower rating. I wanted something with good street manners. If it turns out to be 220 at the wheels so be it. Im also not married to that carb. I used it because i had it. I know edelbrock is not a popular choice for the more serious performance minded folk. I would consider going bigger but would like to stick to edelbrock simply because i have other parts like the TV system i would have to re-buy. this wasnt really supposed to be a technical thread but more of just what my project is but i'm open to suggestions/recommendations.

Regardless of how much HP you will have at the rear wheels I bet you will be able to roast the tires off the line.

the 305 wasnt a complete dog. i had changed the carb, intake and distributor and gained a half sec at the track (15.34). This should be a nice improvement.

I wasn't referring to max horsepower with that cam and compression ratio; I was concerned about driveability. It'll probably be OK since I doubt your engine will really have 10.1:1, more likely 9-9.25 which will work well with that cam.
