Manual to Power Steering

Gentlemen, I'm sure this question has been asked plenty of times before, my Olds was a manual steering car and I am converting to power steering, where is the best place to get a power steering box. And, do they make a quicker ratio steering box for the Oldsmobiles. Thanks.

Not sure there is a 'best' place overall but many great choices depending on budget.

Budget-friendly options include Steer and Gear, whom is a great source for remanufactured p/s pumps and OEM boxes and they can build the boxes to quick ratio and/or firm-feel specs on request. CPP Industries is a great source for all new component quick ratio complete kits (their 500 series box is well documented in the car mags and easily researched on the net) which include the box, steering pump, hoses, pitman arm and rag joint.

I'm sure others on the board can offer more suggestions or links to prior threads but these should get you started. I have the CPP kit on my '72 and LOVE it - you can buy everything in the kit package form or just the items you need individually. Summit Racing offers the CPP products for good prices.

GM a-body boxes are essentially the same - 68-72 Chevelle, Lemans, Cutlass, Skylark should all interchange

Here's a thread discussing an updated steering box that will fit.

I bought a Lares steering box, it has IROC internals 10 to 1 ratio. I think i bought it through Summit or Jegs cant remember which, for around $200. I think you can buy direct from Lares also. Still building the car so i cant comment on how well it works. Im thinkin im gonna like it.

Go to the thread that 2blu442 posted, read through it, and at the end I have posted a link to a very long and thorough thread about these swaps on a site intended for a different Division's A-bodies.

I recently put a used Grand Cherokee 93-98 steering gear in my 67 442. it was basically a bolt in with only having to get a new rag joint and the adapters for the oil lines. I got my adapters from "Lee Power steering" at Steertechgrp.com total cost was under $100 total and oh what an improvement. Every one I build from now on will have this set up. Looks totally stock and is so much better.

Hope this helps

Larry

Year and model would help. Note that the manual steering pitman arm is different from the one for power steering.
