I have 1966 olds 442 and my mechanic said its leaking and I wanted to make sure that just bc it's leaky that it needs rebuilt. It is about time since its never had work done and has 58,000 miles. Also what other performance parts can I put in while rebuilding the tranny such as tongue converters which ones can I put in my car. And since it's a simple tranny should I be able to rebuild it with just a little knowledge about cars and a book or DVD from some store.

Where's it leaking from? Not familiar with the powerglide, but 58K miles and a leak doesn't sound like enough to warrant a rebuild. Is it not shifting properly, slipping? You'll want a book, I recommend an ATSG manual, if available for that transmission.
You also will need a special tool for compressing the clutch return springs in the drums. Some tools for installing drum lip seals are helpful, though a feeler gauge can work. An expander/resizer for the stator shaft seals is helpful. These will help guarantee proper/(internal) leak free operation.
Lubricate the seals well with vaseline during reassembly, do not use ATF, it'll swell the seals and make assembly difficult or impossible. Soak the friction clutches in ATF before assembly so they are not dry on the first apply.
But, if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

Is it the stock trans? Oldsmobile did not use a power glide, it is an ST300 or Jetaway, with a variable pitch torque convertor. There should be a switch pitch actuator/ passing gear assy on your throttle linkage at the firewall.
