Sammy"s 70 Cutlass Convertable
#41
It is coming along. I have another two doors from 70 that I will be putting on this car, These need the bottoms reskinned.....I will do them over the winter. And my nice surprise was the posi.....I have a thicker driveshaft from a 72 that I will put into this car. 455 out front and a 3.73 posi out back I want a strong drieshaft

Thanks Sal.
Allan, the driveshaft is from a 350/350 car and this car has the 455/ 350 . I laid them beside each other and measured and they are within a 1/2 inch of each other.

Coming along...This car has a 2.56 posi in a O type axle. Very cool, since I did not know this when I bought the car. I do not think it is original, but I will try and find the axle code. The driveshaft is from a 72 Cutlass that fit perfectly. So I have a 455/350 with a 2.56 posi. It will be a great highway cruiser and probably descent on fuel. She is starting to live again The rad is 3 core and is in good shape....

The headers I got from a fellow CO member went in fairly easily...the body will be finished in the next 2 weeks then have to decide on color.....waiting on header gaskets, brakes and steering components. I am enjoying working on this car

Ted, that looks awfully darn close to the oil filter. Did you install one after fitting the headers to see if it clears or makes contact?
BTW, I dipped my foot in the Pacific for ya a week ago when I was out at the coast. We had the windstorm and rainstorm of the century. Power outages all over Van, Langley, Surrey, Burnaby.....heck all over the place. No power means 4 way stops everywhere and none of the gas stations could pump product. It was a couple days from hell. Glad to be back home.

Allan, i think it is the angle of the pic....there is lots of room for the filter. As usual, good eye
I was wondering how your trip went. I had heard from my sister on the Island about the weather....did you just stay put for a couple of days? Glad you are back home

The trip back was horrible too. Rots of Rain and we missed the dang turn at Kamloops for #5 and ended up going home on the Trans Canada. It was gruelling. Construction everywhere, windy 2 lane road and lineups galore with average traffic speed only about 70 km/hr till we got past Golden. I was so tired when we got home (11:30pm) that it took 2 days to catch up my sleep.
What color does the cowl tag on the vert say? I'm thinking it's screaming for Matador Red and a white top! SSII's color matched to the body and that car will be a show stopper!

Got the gas tank installed with Pattons pad underneath...and hung the exhaust with header and collector gaskets. Working on rerouting the tranny lines and it will be start up time.

Ha ha ha, I see you installed the tank topper the same way I did - upside down! Shocked I tell ya. Those tank straps need a good sanding before you paint them. The crud is showing too much. Easy to do now while you still have the car up and those fresh bolts will spin off quick.

Ted, I'm sorry. Prolly shouldn't have said anything cause now you went out early in the mawnin to change out all that stuff? Not worth it my friend. No one else is going to notice or really care for that matter. After all it's a 45 year old car.
Whose brake spring kit did you use? I had a bit of problems with the self adjuster on the left side even after I bought a new kit from NAPA. Maybe I'm just being too fussy. My rear backing plate still has the knock out plate in, so if I have to manually adjust those suckers I have to take off the rear wheel each time to make the adjustment. Kind of strange that the kit won't let the star adjuster work right.
I feel bad that I caused you some extra work.

No worries Allan
I used Napas kit also. No problem with the adjustment. The tension springs fit great. I did need new drums. The originals were just too thin.
I had to put in another booster and MC....real fun getting the booster off
Road test today!

I know what you mean about the booster nuts. I had that same nightmare in 2011 when I replaced mine. Later when I was doing the front end, I took out the inner liner and the access to those nuts was super easy. Wish I'd have known that earlier....
How'd the road test go?

Ted, I know you're working hard on this. Couple things that are just quirks of mine. You can ignore them if you want. I'd be doing the following things just to get the best paint job.
1. Remove the door and fender trim; including mirror and marker lights
2. Remove front/rear bumper - it's so hard to sand in there and shoot paint so it will stick with them in place.
This just makes the sanding so much easier and less stuff to mask off. I know it's a lot more labor but not really all that hard to do? Are you putting now weather stripping and fuzzies on? I have an almost full set of that side molding trim if yours end up being damaged. Just missing the door stainless on one side. Got all the rest of it.
What's going on with the deck lid just over the drivers side tail lights? Looks like an awfully large gap there in the picture.
Ok, ducking for cover now....

Thanks for the input Allan. I was under some time constraint, as the temperature has been doing its typical Fall variations. I finished painting the car last night....color is a Blue Lapis. Striping goes on in a few days....
thanks for the offer on the chrome...not too sure yet....okay, duck..I am winding up!

No worries Ted. You were pretty clear that these cars aren't restorations; they are 'saves' so it's not about perfection. I'm just glad you're able to do the work you can! Blue Lapis? I googled that and came up with something like this: I imagine it changes with being in the sun?

striped and painted...i will get some better pics when it comes out.....not too bad and saved some cash doing it at my shop. It was a urethane paint. It may have flashed a little quickly, but it prevented bugs from sticking to it ...like or not, the stripes are a little different..not a 442 w30 or the Supreme pin stripe just somewhere between
