Pinchweld moldings

Pinchweld moldings

Sooo.... I need to get a new set of pinchweld moldings for me 70 conv
The Parts Place has a reconditioned set ( pricey )
The new ones that Fusick has I have been told the curve is not correct for the 70
Both are attached with the clips. My current ones have screws that were used to attach them.
Anybody know how the clips attach to the body. I have the assembly manual but as usual this part is not in it.

I don't have the mounting clips in front of me right now but I believe they just push down on to the pinchweld (as well as sliding or clipping onto/into the underside of the stainless). They "scrape" into the pinchweld and hold on that way.....for lack of a better description you could say they pinch on to the pinchweld for a interference fit.

I'll see if I can put my hands on the mounting clips later today......I pulled them when I pulled off a pair of convert pinchweld stainless pieces from a salvage 68 or 69 Tempest convertible.

I still have the stainless pieces as well and will check the underside to see if they also have screw mounting holes.

The clips mount to the body via a small screw and the pinch weld snaps on to the clips, as I recall with my '68 and '69.

Thanks rcorrigan same question, do you know how many clips it takes and I guess the screw holes on my molding or for extra hold

It seems I read somewhere in the Body Service Manual that there were supposed to be 12 clips. But on both of my cars, there were only 7-8 clips. I suspect it was because they didn't use 12 at the assembly plants because I'm pretty sure mine had never been off before I took them off. I'm not sure the clips I had for my '68 and '69 are the same your car uses. When I look them up in the Fusick catalog, the clip I used for both cars was part number D3645 which they say is just for the '68 but my '69 had the same clips. I don't see a listing in Fusick for the '70 model clip.

I don't know if my car was missing the clips, but I didn't have any clips on my '72 442 convertible. Here are some pics of my pinchweld, maybe I'm missing something but this went together well, like it was supposed to be this way.

IMO that is factory correct for your car Rodney. I think what may have happened is the factory changed the pinchweld molding attachment method at some point. Changed from the clip attachment method to the screw-on attachment method. As I mentioned above the pinchweld molding I pulled that had clips holding it on was a 68 or 69 Pontiac. I also remember pulling a set from a '72 Cutlass convert here (as well as a '72 442 vert) and it was held on w/the screws. Who knows??.....maybe it was a GM division difference, a assembly plant difference, a year model difference.

Looks to me like a change for the better. Those clips were a royal pain for me to get set firmly in place. Once in place, though, the pinchweld snapped on nicely. No snapping in place, as it appears, with the '72 pinchweld.
