New 1970 pace car on the block
Well I'm tired of trying to post here maybee this one will work....have a 1970 pace car y74 model convertable original 350 engine and trans. Took it to the tire center and a service truck backed into it. Now it's restoration time early and it's gunna hurt bad but we'll worth it. What can I do to stay original and add any desireable upgrades aka maybee my bench to buckets and floor shift? Any tips advice or w/e would be great thanks in advance. Apparently this site is a allergic to my pics also

I had a 70 pace car years ago. It was a Cutlass as they made them in both 442 and in Cutlass lines. Mine was also a bench seat car. Don't think on that rare a car I would change a thing.

Welcome. In the REPLY TO THREAD page, scroll down to the ADDITIONAL OPTIONS box and click on MANAGE ATTACHMENTS. Add your photos or other files. Pay attention to max file size and limit your uploads to about four per post.

The car will be most valuable and desireable with it restored as close to original as possible. If you have paperwork for it I would restore it exactly as it's shown on your window sticker, broadcast card or build sheet (which you probably don't have). Bench seat to buckets will hurt the value because the bench seat interior is listed on your cowl tag.

Thanks for the advice
I'll take a look around I think I actually do have the build sheet hiding somewhere just gunna have to dig for it.as far as pics go I'm on a cellphone so resizing is more of a pain ill see if I can get some on here later. As far as the console buckets advice thanks I'll probably stay bench but some of these cars did come with buckets just not mine. Well I dug around a bit and found a letter from the oldsmobile history stating the cant find new car invoices earlier than 1977 so they can't tell me wich options were installed on my car but they gave us a copy of the salesperson folder n paint trim data plus ama specs and general specs any of this useful to me? Oh and another upgrade I was thinking was painting on the original decals any ideas?

X2 on what Joe said .... I just use a website called shrinkpictures.com . I'm sure there's better ones to use , but it works for me . Just check the " 760 pixel " circle , click browse , pick the photo from your desktop or wherever you have them stored , click resize , right click on photo when it's done , and then save it to desktop . Then do what Joe said and go into the " Manage Attachments " , pick the resized photo , and upload it when your posting . It's easier then you think .
#10
Tried your websites, for resizing and it says file size is too large. I'll download an app or something to get you guys pic's . Restore is gunna be a little while since I gotta sell my 350z to fund the other half of the paintjob/fix ... I know you guys say stay as close to build as possible but I can't stand the white convertable top unless someone can talk me out of it I'm going black looks so much sharper. Same for painting on the original decals vrs actual decals.

Also I guess bear in mind I'm not fixing it to sell I plan to own this for a very long time... if someone's got a wallet big enough for me to sell it I'm sure a top swap and anything else minor won't be a huge issue. And whoever posted broadcast card how do I get this I haven't heard of it. Mine is a non festival non track car from what I can tell. Iv also read that only 60 cutlass convertable Pace cars came with the 350 engine, is this accurate? Crazy to know I own something even close to this rare. Maybee not as desireable as the 442's but from what I can read even rarer?

So by rights not the rarest of the bunch, but I have seen some crazy numbers on the cutlass pace cars.

There were 358 Cutlass Pace Car convertible with the 350 and 268 442's, and you're correct about the white top. I don't know why I thought they were black

Lol yay got one to work atleast now you guys can see the damage to my baby and some of the car itself. And as far as it goes I thought it was 358 cutlass convertable made but only 60 with the smaller 350 engine. The article I read may have it facts wrong. It was an article about one of these being car if the week in 2012 or 13 and how the couple got it for a Sunday ice cream cruiser fro. A son in law or something g Google 1970 cutlass y74 and it usually show up close to the top sorry for typos on my phone as usual

Have seen some of these with the yellow circle behind the doors sayin something to the effect of indy 500 festival..... is this only for festival cars... did someone go overboard with their build or what? I kinda like it personally and wouldn't mind it on mine when done if it's authentic but I have no idea. This is my favorite pace car iv seen and ultimately would like to imitate it if it's authentic n such. Hope pic loads ps I think thats street glare coming off the pavement and not paint color for the under areas.

You keep saying something like smaller 350? Cutlass supreme's came standard with 350-4bbl @310HP. Now with forced air induction I would assume that it was similar to the Ralleys and W-31 again that is an assumption.
There was a option to drop down to the 2bbl with 250HP.
Here is a list of the track/festival cars:http://442.com/tech/tech.html
click on code on top tool bar and #1 on the list is the Indy. pace car assignments with the last part of the VIN.

I've been intrigued by these Cutlass Pace cars since around 2001. I went to look at one in Needham, MA right down the street from Berejik. A very nice lady a few years older than me was selling it. She had owned the car since she was a kid. It had been to California and back with her (she worked there for a while) and she had just begun to have a family. I think she was in her mid thirties. It was complete except for the OAI air cleaner assembly which had been stolen. It had new rust free 1/4's hung on it and the bodywork was pretty much done except for paint. She had done much of the bodywork herself and the car was straight as an arrow. I remember she was asking $7k for it and I only had $5k and she wouldn't go that low. I often wonder what happened to that car.

Thanks for posting up pics for me and the general interest. As far as I know its all stock except the distributer n plugs n such. I even have the stock wheels hiding in the garage rafters . This has been a garage queen since late 70s early 80s I'd say.after my grandfather died The family was gunna sell it off for 4k and split the money so my dad bought out the rest of the family and built a garage for it after he found out what he had.this was sometime between 95 and y2k I'd say He passed several years ago and my mom was getting to the time to sell it point she really didn't want to it was her dad's car. So we were letting it stretch it's legs and catch some sun, once we worked out the sitting g for 40 years hick ups I fell in love with it on the way to the tire center where it got its new body work . Now I got mom to sell it to me so she can get some money but still keep it in the family. Gunna have to drop 14k to have the accident fixed and make the body rust free and fresh paint. I'm going to have to sell my 350z to fund the other half the insurance wouldn't pay for. I hate to see my baby go but I like to think I'm trading up so it doesn't hurt so bad.

Well now that you guys are getting an idea of its history and can see the car yourself.
1. Do I paint on the decals or stay with actual decals.
2. Would performance engine upgrades that keep the same matching block be a good or bad idea.. aka crank... over boring etc mostly want longer lasting than track car so I guess I gave bad examples keep in mind I'm not looking for a monster or any major mods and I'm a noob when it comes to motors n upgrades just want it to be solid enough to drive x country if I wanted.
3. What would you do to this if it was your car
Thanks again for the help and advice, can't wait to post up some done pictures but it's gunna be a little while.

In direct reply to your post pat from the research I have done with what limited there is it seems the 1970 convertable cutlass pace car I own and aprox 59 others were made with a 350 engine where as the rest had the 455 I believe it was. Plus there is the fact this is not a cutlass supreme but a cutlass y74 pace car may make a difference I would assume...are you versed in these or just posting?
And just to satisfy you, here are my qualifications are as followed:
#1 My close friend (Ron Adams) has Pace #2
#2 another friend Steve Zaban has a 442 pace car and a pace wagon (replica)
#3 My dad worked for Oldsmobile for 39 years
#4 My Uncle was an engineer for Oldsmobile for 40 years
#5 I have close to 100 Oldsmobile/Fisher workers, engineers, dealership level people and Oldsmobile district sales managers, that I have come to know over the years.
#6 I ran or was part of the Oldsmobile Homecoming show. 7 years on the committee (largest Oldsmobile car show in the world)
#7 I am a Oldsmobile club of America master judge (highest level besides head judge of the club)
#8 I was the President of the R.E. Olds chapter.
#9 I have lived in or around the Lansing area my entire life! Over 4 1/2 decades. I started at 8 years old handing wrenches over the fenders of Oldsmobiles.
#10 I have been in every Lansing plant (1-5) including SPO.
#11 I have been member of this forum for close 4 years and pushing 2000 posts.
I can continue my barrage, I believe that I made my point!
In closing I have tried to do my homework before I post. While I will admit to not being 100% accurate. But 98% is.

Pat

ALL the 1970 Cutlass Supreme pace car replicas came with 350 motors. Olds sold two flavors of 1970 pace car replicas, Cutlass Supreme convertibles and 442 convertibles. The 442s all got the 455s, which was the only engine offered in a 442 that year. The Y74 package was an appearance package only. White paint with black and red stripes, white-painted SSIII wheels, W-25 hood. Pace car decals in the trunk. The rest of the equipment was standard issue Cutlass Supreme or 442 convertible equipment.

Just posting??? Wow, a little harsh. FYI All 70-72 convertibles are cutlass supremes unless they are a 442 (same body style) 455's came standard in all 70-71 442's.

My nose was slightly out of joint, but let be bygones be bygones. We will go forward from here as no hard feelings!
I tried to use tact and diplomacy in my above post and I too do apologize, if I came off terse.
Also, I do like the fact that your going to restore your car to original. I happen to be a stickler for having things as close as possible to factory.
And I can help you contact the people above to get some help on questions answered that can't be done here. Even though there are quite a few people on this forum that are well qualified!

Same no hard feelings here either... but I still haven't got an answer to paintING on the original decals vrs actual decals unless I missed it somewhere... and that yellow circle on some of them on Google does that only apply to festival cars only or did someone just add it I can't seem to find a clear answer about it. Once again thanks in advance for the tips n such

Please read what carshinebob has said in this thread. Plus this shows my buddys car. Bob Reeve has restored many Oldsmobiles over the years and has been in and around the Lansing area for years.

Been thinking of streamlining this thread now that it's in major builds. keeping pictures and maybee a few informational posts. Should I leave this and start a fresh or try to edit this down a tad...can alays leave it alone too.. just don't want a cluttred build post.
