heads for a 350

I have a healthy 1970 olds 350 with # 6 heads. already have headers, decent cam, msd ignition, eddelbrock performer rpm intake, 2500 stall torque converter, etc. I want to go to the next level with a good flo set of heads. if it were you would you spend the Money to have the #6 heads ported and flo benched or spend the money on the eddy aluminum heads and do the porting necessary on the intake to make them work for a 350. It will be over $2000 to get the eddys to work not sure the cost on reworking the cast #6 heads. What would you do?

Ebrock heads are around $1700

You wouldn't have to do any porting on them, in stock form I know a guy who's running 10.40s with them on a 455.

You would need to have them milled .060" to keep your compression up and you would need a few other things like head bolts, roller rockers and good gaskets.

You'll have to get the intake ports on your RPM intake opened up to match the ports on Ebrock heads but believe me that make the top of the ports and flange very thin. I would opt for a Victor intake, it has more meat above the ports and flange than does the rpm intake and with it's long runners, you won't lose any bottom end torque. Mill intake flange .080" so it will fit your .060" heads. So now your budget has just grown to around $2700 going this route.

It would be much cheaper to port a set #5 or #6 heads yourself. Have bronze valve guide installed, put in 2.11 intake and 1.66" Pontiac SS Valves or 2.08 to 2.10 SBC intakes and 1.625 SS Valves. I would only get a 3 angle valve job instead of a 5 angle one if this is a street car because wider seats last longer than narrow ones will. Set of heads. $100 bucks. clean and checked for cracks $80. Port yourself, free. Valves $200, valve job $100, guides installed $100. Open up the intake runners yourself, free. 1/2 horsepower dremal $100, bits you need to port heads and intake $150. Mill heads .020" and intake 1.2 times more $150 and we are up to $900 and you still need head bolts and roller rockers guide plates/pushrods and your heads to drilled and tapped for 7/16 studs and good gaskets, so thats another $800 so now we are at $1700.

Lets see, you want to go fast. Nitrous Kit $500 Fuel system upgrades $400 good head gaskets and bolts $300.

I would spend a few hundred on the wife or girl friend, that would probably be money more wisely spent as she might take you to the next level and from my experience, is much more enjoyable.

Peace

I have been going back and forth on the decission on which way to go. Eddy heads or #5 heads reworked.some say its not worth the money with eddy heads and having to rework them to fit a small block or rework intake like you stated. When I can achieve the same HP by reworking the #5 heads for less money just like you said. I wish I could get a set of #5 heads already done. I really do not want to spend nearly$3000. On heads for a street car.My #6 heads have roller rockers already and new springs just not sure what else hase been done to them and do not wish to tear apart a perfectly good motor just to do exploratory surgery.

Talk to Jim at J&S Machine. He can hook you up with a pair of ported iron heads for your small block without breaking the bank.
