I drug this 70 Pace Car home tonight. I don't have time for it now but I am sure I will tinker on it now and then. This thing does have a little rust but not bad at all. For sure don't need any panels replaced, just a patch here and there. The only thing I see not original at this time (other than tires, battery and that sort of thing) is the alternator. The vacuum hoses, wiring, and routing of them are even original. The interior was just pulled out of it in the past month and is all there other than the carpet. My plan at this time is to put the interior back in and redo the brakes and get it to the point that it can be pulled in and out of the garage easily. He was installing a heater core but did not finish. I will get that done and rebuild all the interior side of the heat and A/C and see if I can get the A/C to work.

It has a repaint but they taped over the original stripe decals. The car needs a full restoration.

Another white convertible for the stable. I always liked the Cutlass Pace Car more than the 442 Pace Car. It must be that 350 4-bbl dual exhaust combination.

Does your Pace Car have the FE-2 suspension? I believe it was optional on the Cutlass version. Was it ordered with disc brakes and a posi rear axle?

Does the Pace Car still have the factory radiator, heater, and bypass hose clamps? My brother is trying to determine what type of hose clamps was factory for each the hoses on his Rallye.

I think the radiator hose had the double wire clamps and possibly the by-pass hose. The heater hoses are questionable. One thread shows the single wire spring type and another shows the pinch spring band type. Any help as to determining the clamp types would be appreciated.

This is another car that found me. Many of my more recent cars found me more than I find them. I picked up a parts car a couple years back and give him my business card. Told him I pay finders fee if he finds me an Oldsmobile or parts that I end up buying. Well, He called me and told me about this car. I am sending him $200

The funny thing is, The parts car I got from him also found me and I had to pay our Matco tool guy $50 finders fee for that one.

No sway bar and only a 2.56 open rear end. Also drum brakes on the front and single exhaust 4 bbl. These clamps were the original on the heater core side of the heater hoses. The former owner pulled the heater hoses to change the heater core. The other side of the hoses and the radiator hoses had the clamps changed to modern style clamps.
Car has its original ED radiator.

 

Thanks Eric for the information and photos. I forwarded them to my brother. The band type pinch clamps you show are the clamps seen on some '70 cars, while others have the single wire pinch clamps on the heater hoses. The lower radiator looks like the double wire screw type clamps seen advertised on the Oldsmobile part websites for '70 models.

I knew the FE-2 was not included with the '70 Pace Car package, but I thought the dual exhaust and cut-out bumper was part of the package. Guess I was wrong. Always a lot to learn.

A long time friend of mine, a parts manager at a local Olds/Cad dealership had a 442 Pace Car... Just before he passed away, he put it up for sale for highest offer from any of his friends... I was beat out by $5K... Good thing is, the car is still in this area and I keep tabs on it in the off chance it goes up for sale again... In addition I gave the current owner my contact info just in case he should get bored with it and want to let it go...

I got home from work today and decided to wash this car up just a little. Don't let the pictures fool you, It is in desperate need of a paint job. I knew it was a solid body before I bought it but it is even more solid than I thought. It has had a dent in the driver side rear quarter but don't appear to have been to bad.

I checked and the A/C still has pressure. Not much pressure but enough to know it don't have a major leak. I am going to put the interior back together and fix the A/C.

Not sure if I posted this before but from what I understand, this car was parked in 1980. I was told they started it every year. I tend to believe it really was parked in 1980 because I have a receipt that shows 101,000 miles in 1979 and it has 102,000 now.

I am not sure what I am doing with the car at this time. I have been working between 68 and 75 hours a week and don't have time for it now. I want to get it road worthy and drive it like it is for a while but that is not going to happen this year. I had a couple offers on the car but did not really plan to sell it. I may end up letting it go and get back to the Jetfire project.

 

I don't need to sell this car but at the same time, I really don't have time for it. I am not listing it in the for sale section but if you would be interested in it for $10K let me know. If I could just spend a weekend working on it I could have it into driver condition. Maybe this winter if it is still here....

 

So whatever happened with this car. I remember your last project and was hoping to see more updates on the restoration

 

We ended up selling it to a guy in Indianapolis. I just couldn't get excited about this one. He is restoring it for his wife to drive. My next personal restoration will be our 62 Jetfire 4 speed car. That restoration is on hold till after the 2019 Homecoming show. I talked them into hosting the Jetfire as the feature car for 2019 and going to take it and our automatic car both. I don't have enough time to restore that car before then so it will have to wait.

At this time I have zero desire to restore another 70-72 car. I am sure I will someday and I have some parts set aside for doing one but it will not be any time soon. Thanks for following my other car.
