Thanks 35olds
Paul has come through for me. I've purchased a decal from him along with helpful, detailed application instructions.

Weather-permitting, engine and transmission should be reunited with each other and with the H/O (frame & body without front clip) tomorrow.
Keeping fingers crossed.

That's pretty exciting Tom! I will send you great weather! I am anxious to see the assembly pics! Good luck with it...I hope it goes great!

I finally have the 10.25:1 EGGE pistons and rings, and am awaiting the main bearing shipment in days, so then it is off to the machine shop to have the rods and pistons mated up, and bring all the pieces home soon thereafter for a engine assembly fest. My project is dependent upon other parts of the project to move forward. I will build the engine on the stand and once it is done, I will take the El Camino out of service for a time. During that time the 3.8 V6 oil leaker will be removed and all of the parts and pieces in the way of the 350. I have a firewall panel to install and also do some cleanup and touchup with the black satin paint. I also need to take hard looks at the transmission and brakes while it is up. I will get the Olds engine mounts and then search for pulleys and brackets and starters and it should be close to running. As always, there are dozens of little hookup things aka car and trans linkage, speedo cables, radiator hoses and water pumps, oil filter and fuel pumps that will need to be worked out. It all starts tomorrow! I have to clean up the garage, as it looks like someone picked it up and shook it! Locating my tools and getting them put away will save me trips to buy duplicates...(Yes dear I do have one of those somewhere but I need it now!) I have yet to find my ring compressor...DAMMIT

Well, something else besides the weather has altered my plans for tomorrow.
The transmission, which I've not seen for months until today, was only serviced internally. The exterior was not detailed in any way. The engine guy (who picked it up from the transmission guy today) and I were both surprised/disappointed by this.
Long story short tomorrow I'll be assisting with detailing the trans. The engine guy has a stand which will enable the unit to be turned, inverted, etc. to expedite/simplify the task.
I'm about to search CO for photos of correctly detailed transmissions so this gets done correctly.

Dammit! Why can't we find capable and reputable mechanics anymore....well we can't find them any less either. It seems to me that so many times in any service field, not just cars, you have to return and take it back or send it back or just eat the costs out of total frustration. My Machine shop guy is spectacular at painting and detailing the work he does. I would be stunned if I got anything back from him less than new looking...you should expect the same! That being said, there is no one better to detail an Olds correctly than a GOOD Olds guy and they are few and far between, especially vintage ones! I am finding a lot of people with about half as much knowledge as they think, and twice the amount of opinions, wrong or right!

rcorrigan5, Thanks for your input as well, including the location of the date code.
Long story short (may be too late for that), I've decided to seek the correct 7029251 carb, and several resources have surfaced.

FStanley, Thanks for the recommendation.

Correct carb at least number.... date might be a little more difficult but every '69 88 and 98 455 got the same carb.. have Cliff's high performance in Ohio rebuild and recolor it..

https://cliffshighperformance.com/

you won't be sorry and in the correct original type platings.. spot on.. others do a "gold" zinc plating for the body, looks nice but NOT original.. Mine still looks like new years later..

also have him put in his full taper 0.044 Primary Rods runs MUCH better and Cooler.. in '68 they started to lean them out for emissions... note in 1967 425ci was 0.044 see:

https://oldsjunction.classicoldsmobi...sfaq/ofcrb.htm

this knocked off a ton of engine temp a idle and low speed. for me.. also easier start..

Yeah youi're gonna wait for it..

just sayin'

Also, if anyone needs Quadrajet help, check out Cliff's Forum a TON of info/experiences.....

Would they suggest the distributor is correct/original for a '69 H/O?
Thanks.
Tom - I just looked at the Supercars Unlimited "442 By The Numbers" book and it shows the 1111989 distributor to be for a 1969 W32 400 motor.

The same book shows the '69 H/O distributor to be a 1111973.

So....I was incorrect in my thinking above when I mentioned I thought your 1111989 dist was correct. Still, you can double check with someone just in case the info I'm referring to is wrong, etc.

Both the 111973 and 111989 are acceptable correct distributors for the ‘69 H/O. The 111973 is more sought after as they were exclusively used in the H/O. The 111989 was also used in the W-30, so they are slightly less rare. My original drag car came with the 111989.

Tim,
Thanks for the photos of the unrestored trans.
I spent the past 2 days blasting and detailing my trans. Blasting took a lot of time and a lot of sand, due to the grainy texture of the case exterior.
I think the final results are good.
For whatever reason I didn't take photos after I finished - will do so when the trans and engine are being loaded onto the car.
The "OH" letters on my case were greenish teal color, in close proximity to where they are on one of your photos.

Fred,
I did find a carb from a source in Texas, Quadrajet Power.
I was going to post a photo of it, but I want to leave it in its current stretch-wrapped status until it's installed.
Thanks for the great input nonetheless.

Tim,
I'm needing to confirm if I missed anything during my trans detailing.
Can you post the following photos of the unrestored trans:
1) Full view of dipstick side of the trans.
2) View of the back end of the unit (mounting bracket end).

Tom,
I posted all of the photos I have of that trans. The car is currently unavailable as it is in a Museum right now. Here are some photos of a trans in my other barn find.

Tim,
Thanks for the postings.
I applied a new decal to the trans tag this past Sunday. The stamped numbers were at an angle, like those on the tag in your pics. I had to find the best compromise for where to place the decal with respect to the stamping, but the results were pretty good.
The tag itself has slight waves in it. I tried to flatten them but this was difficult with the vertical ridges of the trans case behind the tag.

Looks good. Use an X-Acto blade to cut around the rivet. Here is my convertible trans tag. Not an original Hurst trans but still looks good.

Tim,
Your tag looks great. I hope I'm steady enough to cleanly cut around the rivet.
Your engine/trans photo looks great also.
Is your exhaust system from Gardner?

No Tom the exhaust system was bought from Inline Tube. When I restore my hardtop, I plan to use Gardner.

Tom, I don’t know if you have a resolution for the manifold question from earlier, but I’ve found these from Troy Thornton today....

Tim,
I received the exhaust system from Gardner a few days ago and unpacked it today. The components look great and were very well packaged.
I worked primarily with Eric Gardner, who was very patient with my questions and enjoyable to talk to.
Frankly, I thought the pricing was pretty good.

Engine/Trans Back Where They Belong

Posting a few pics of the engine and trans reunited and installed.
I was pretty adamant about trailering the car to the engine/trans shop for installation, rather than loading the engine/trans in a pickup bed.
Installation process was efficient. Had to temporarily remove the driver's side engine mount to provide adequate clearance and expedite alignment.

Transmission tag decal was trimmed around rivet after this pic was taken. I had someone else do it who was likely steadier than I would have been.

Thermostat Housing

Tim,
Thanks for the therm housing tip. I'll be searching for an original. In the meantime, is the repo unit in the attached pic correct? Thanks.

Not sure if that repro is 100% correct in that it has the offset radiator hose outlet. The #5 diecast thermo housings have the outlet CENTERED. I'm just not 100% sure when they changed over.

The PN cast into the #5 (centered outlet) housing is 404632. The PN cast into a #1 (offset outlet like the #2 shown above) is 386129. Maybe someone can look up your application in a parts manual and see if it calls for either of these.

I assume this repro is in case iron..

I found an original potmetal one which I thought was in good condition, a few years later, it disintegrated at the 3/4" outlet. Dissimilar metal issue..

though not original, the cast iron one is holding up great many years (15) later, I got from Fusick.

Just an FYI

Replacement Grills

I'm needing to order replacement grills for the H/O.
I'd like to know from others on CO if they've been happy with the grills from Fusick, which are shared with Cutlass and Vista Cruiser.
I know they would need to be painted black.
Thanks.

I’ve never heard any issues with the Fusick grills. Make sure to get 442 as opposed to cutlass
