I enjoy seeing all the projects on the site and thought some of you guys might be interested in seeing this. I have a '69 442 convertible which I've been working on since the mid 80's. Finally got it close to done a couple of years ago and decided I needed a new project. I found this Cutlass S in Colorado (I'm in NC) last October. It's a low compression 350 car but is amazingly original with only 80k miles. It's a bench seat 4-speed car which was really attractive and it's over-all in great condition.
The previous owner did a rattle can paint job at some point but sent me pictures of the car prior so I had an idea of what was under there. It took me close to 10 hours and a can of acetone but the driver's fender came out great. Turns out the guy didn't even sand the original paint prior to hitting it with the rattle can. You couldn't ask for a better scenario. A LOT of elbow grease will be needed but the rest of the car should turn out great.
4 speed...nice. I’m curious what size tires are on it.
Hi,
The wheels are actually the original 14x6 SSII's that came off my 442 (although this car had the same wheels originally). I put 15x7 Wheel Vintique SSI's on my convertible and repurposed these for the Cutlass. The tires are 245/60-14's all around. They're pushing it for the 6" wide wheel but they work and fill out the wheel wells a lot better than the original tires used on these wheels.
I'm planning on going with 15x7 (front) and 5x8 (rear) SSI's at some point down the road. These cars really need at least a 15" wheel, in my opinion (I'm not a big fan of the taller aftermarket wheels some guys go with) and I think they look better with another half inch in height.
I just did a disc brake conversion on the front and these 14x6 wheels fit. They were designed for disc brake applications (not like the 14x6 SSI's) so I figured I was good. Ended up having to take a dremmel to a couple of high spots on the caliper brackets but nothing major.
