Smile 69 442 Conv Re-Build

Hi All,
I know the first thing you will want is pictures. I am sorry I did not start with that. I guess the issue with that is when you own the car for so long, you forget about taking pictures.

Anyway, I have a 69 442 conv that I have owned for 28 years. It was not in the best shape when purchased, but it passed inspections in PA. Fast forward to now and the restoration project has finally became a reality. It will be a slightly modified restoration. The driveline is underway. The original 400 and trans will be pulled and saved for rebuild at a later date.

The body is where I am at now. I am in the process of removing the dash. This is not a fun stage. I have read any and all posts I could find regarding the dash removal and I am not very happy with what I see. I think I would rather go to the dentist. My current issue is the drop of the column. I have removed the 2 nuts and it will not drop. It is a floor shift auto car with no AC. What would be keeping it in place? Anybody in northeast PA want to work for good beer?

Thanks,

Thanks,
I just pulled my steering column yesterday on my 69. So you will need to remove the two bolts that hold the retaining bracket against the dash (sounds like you did). Then assuming the everything under the hood is removed, you simply follow the steering column to the firewall and you will see a plate that attaches to the firewall. There should be 6 bolts if I am not mistaken (I think 1/2"). Once these are removed you will be able to pull the column. Just a point to note is that the ignition wiring wiring harness that is mounted to the column also must be disconnected.

If you dont have a hard copy of the Service Manual you can always refer to the Wild About Cars archive for more info...

Best of luck

Thanks for the link.
I do have a service manual. I was following the section on the dash/instruments removal and it states remove the 2 nuts, A and B, and lower the column to rest on the seat. My column will not lower. I am now wondering if the wire harness is holding it. At this point I think I will unbolt and unclip everything.
Thanks again.

I have a replacement frame that is ready to be built. I had it powdercoated semi-gloss black. I had the a-arms and core support done at the same time. I built a 455 that should be a nice upgrade. It should work out to be a nice stock looking engine, however it will be a solid 425HP, 550FT/LBS engine with stock carb and intake. I want to drive this car as I would have driven my bikes, so I want to do an over drive trans. Over the next few years I will have the original engine and trans re-done. If I ever sell the car the new owners can have it. I highly doubt that I will ever sell it just because I held on to the car for 4 moves and 20 years of marriage. And I almost have my dream garage to work on stuff.

I also always wanted an AC car, so I am planning on the Vintage Air set up.

Thanks,

Sounds like a fun project! I'll be following along. X2 to Boilerz25 on having to remove either the 6 bolts on the pier wall plate or the clamp that clamps the plate to the steering column. Cannot wait for some pics.
