68 Convert rear of quarter molding question.
68 Convert rear of quarter molding question.
I got a set of the molding for my 442 from one of the finer Olds vendors in Connecticut. I went to put them on today and find my old ones are different with a little lip to retain them horizontally while the repop ones have a little tit(He said tit!) that looks to go into a relief hole to maintain it in a horizontal position....I dont feel like drilling a hole ..just want to either grind or cut-off wheel the tit off. Has anyone done this before? I would imagine I wouldn't want to let it get to hot so as not to repaint the piece or damage the chrome? You guys suppose this would have been like a middle of the year change on these?
Tom, you might be onto something with the mid-year change idea. Here's the right hand side I removed from a 1968 4 door car many years ago. John
I just checked the casting numbers and my left hand one is #8719932 which is different than your factory one. I thought both the convert and 4 door shared the same deck lid trim... I wonder if I'm wrong about that?

part numbers
Thanks for the reply 2blu, I looked at the part numbers on my old trim pieces...LH7787361 and RH7787362. these are my originals and they have the lip that goes to the bottom against the lower edge of the rear of the quarter. Definately different part numbers from the old set I picked up LH8719932 and RH8719931 which are like yours and the repops. I guess I should decode my car and see when it was built.
The convertible trunk trim and the hardtop trunk trim pieces are different - all 3 across the bottom edge of the trunk. The design of the convertible trunk lid is different from the hardtop trunk lid, as are the top part of the quarters. That also explains why the power antenna unit for a '68 convertible has a different positioning on the quarter (it sits entirely on top of of the passenger quarter) whereas the hardtop power antenna piece sits on the crease of the passenger quarter.

If I had to choose, if your trunk lid doesn't have the holes, I'd grind off the bump on the trim piece. It's so much easier replacing the trim pieces in today's world (with the repops) than it is replacing an entire trunk lid. Just my personal opinion.

Yah. it definately goes into an extra hole that must've been on some of the 68's. It doesn't sit flat against the quarter. I sent mine to a plater in Yuma Colorado today to get an estimate on replating my originals...if the estimate comes in reasonably..I will have them plated. If not, I will cut off the positioning nub and see how it fits...maybe a little two sided trim adhesive. Thanks guys for all your help. You are genious!

My car had the extra hole. My car was built the last week of April. If your car is painted (& im pretty sure it is) I'd grind off the tit. I had to do some grinding and opening up holes in the rear 1/4 for the peak trim & it killed me to do it.
Of course my car is currently being completely repainted (again). But that's another story to come.........
