my plans since it is so far gone will be to make it into a Gasser/Altered type

street/strip car. bare bones,make the front end tilt,strait axle.

when I get started I will keep ya posted....

Lol that WIL FISCHER OLDS car has a way longer back end than the 65 you picked up. Are you really going to put in all that work extending the whole thing to look like a flopper?

 

Back in the day they moved the rear end forward in those drag cars. If you look you will see the rear tires almost right behind the door.

 

Right. But is he going to go for it? and reshape the wheel wells and everything?
That would be a refreshing build for this MAJOR builds and projects section.

Good question. You have to ad in frame and suspension work. A lot of work.

 

It doesn't even have a frame anymore. The kid cut it up. RED71 only has a body at the moment with no glass, hood or doors as far as I know.
I will definitely be watching this one.

 

This will be an awesome build nobody does gasser Oldsmobiles looking forward to this one

 

I gotta be the biggest fan of this build thats for sure, didn't have the skill to fix it so someone came along to fix it who does!

Jeremy: He does have the doors with the glass, front fenders, deck lid, and the window trim other then that its kinda bare bones...

Here is a pretty famous Olds Altered Wheelbase/Gasser......just for an idea!

I figured since there is no frame to start with this will make it easier for me
to cut it up,and the rear 1/4s around the wheel opening are bad.
thats part of why I decided to make a Gasser/ altered / some call them
street freaks also. As soon as I saw this body I new right away what I wanted to do to it.

I have a 1967 400 E engine that I have raced for years in my 71,that will probably
go in here or my mild 455.

I photo shopped the back of that Fischer car, all I did was move the wheel opening
forward.then filled in where the wheel was. look at the distance of the front tire also. I moved it forward also.

I have a few leads on a hood,but that can wait for now.

this project was suppose to on the back burner, but dont think I can let
it sit. My 15 year old daughter is really excited about helping on this car.

Doing it period correct would be awesome! And if you look closely at the color pic, you can see the seams of the weld around the front wheelwell, to help you as a guide on how to do the openings correctly.....keep us posted!

my brother and I used to do this when we built our models at home use a piece of the plastic sprue the parts come on for a front Axle, used a piece of dowel and sand paper to radius the rear wheel wheels it's a piece of cake!! LOL... on a model!!

love the project though!!! I know it is blasphemy but that car would look cool with a thunderbolt tear drop hood, and if you get an old offy dual quad manifold and run small 4 bbls as Joe mentioned in another post or maybe even 2 holley 2's with adapters and the ram air set up like a thunderbolt fairlane it would be wicked!! gotta have fenderwell headers, maybe with cutouts?

started with the weedeater on the right and ended up with the gasser on the left LOL...

a couple of things that it will get, gota have tilt front end, the bumpers were junk
so they will be round chrome tube,and a pony keg on the front bumper tube.

Oh and the fender headers.

It does bring back a lot of nostalgia for me, I am 50+ years old and gassers were just changing or dying when I got driving, I did have a 1962 ford econoline pick up truck with a 327 chevy, turbo 400 and a 12 bolt rear mounted the chevy in the bed of the truck, thinking back I should have put zoomies on it, but still remember driving on jerico turnpike in centereach long island with it it was a blast!! handling sucked though LOL... wonder whatever happened to that truck? anyway remember there was still a few straight axle cars running around, use to go to national speedway at the end of the island.

Had a friend who had a '69 SS396 Chevelle, and in '73, he had the E/O record at National Speedway. E/Optional was E/Stock w/ either street slicks or open head pipes, and he ran open head pipes. The only cars that could give him a run were the 340 Darts and Dusters as they'd get him out of the hole, and he'd catch them in third gear (on the big end). I also went there and to Raceway Park, in Englishtown, N.J. w/ three guys who had an H/MP Falcon, remember the H modifieds were all straight six cylinders then. Those were great times. Chevys were a dime a dozen and ran like hell. I'm ok w/ all makes and models and don't knock any. Long Live the "Gassers." I'm building a straight axle (original axle) '62 Ford pick-up w/ an Olds 455 and turbo 400. (my reason f/ being on this site.) I've had the truck f/ 23 years and have a 9" rear in it now. I'm keeping the leafs in the rear, but some modifications from the original set-up. I'm going to try to find fender well headers f/ it, the bed only fleetside panels, frame floor-don't want the weight.
Just a thought; these guys were calling the old funny cars Gassers. The ones w/ the rear wheel wells moved foreward were the first funny cars, not gassers. Don't forget, Modified and Gas were in the same category, and Funny Car a class of it's own.

when you use to run down to the electrical supply house and buy a couple lengths of electrical conduit bend em around whatever size tire you were running, cut the cancer to the shape of the conduit and weld it ( or braze it ) and it made the best looking arched wheel well!! I know nowadays that is heresy, but geez things were simpler! LOL..

Hi Red! Love the project. I may have some parts you can use. I have a complete frame from my '67 that has a 12 bolt rear diff in it, but you would need to change the gears because it was from a 330 CI with a 2 speed. It has 4 wheel drum brakes. The front springs were cut at the chassis shop. I also have a complete 9" ford with a spool and disc brakes. It was completely stripped of all brackets and now has a back brace & drain/ fill plug & cap. I also have a new ladder bar setup. PM me if you want any of this stuff that I don't need. I'll make you a helluvadeal.

Ive been saying for months i need to build a mid-60s straight axle car. I am scheduled to pick up a car on sunday that is the perfect candidate. Going with dual quads and velocity stacks. No inner fender wells with headers pointing down and faked to look open. My wife says no work on it until i finish the H/O for her

Are those Olds headers? Where did you get them?

Are you getting a straight axle off something or going to build it? I have plans for a straight tube axle if you need them.

 

Hi guys, been working on my 71 and going to the track.
Was going to let the 65 sit till winter to work on it but I just cant see
to leave it alone . I will post a few new pictures as soon as the camera turns up.

Boldsmobile, what year car are you picking up? it will be cool to see more of these around. the headers you see in the pic. are just some coated ''A" body headers.
I just tied them in place for the "look". I have been looking at some boat headers
I think they call them O.T.T. (over the the top ?) that way they will come out past the
frame and down. I am sure I will have cut and modify them,but its a starting point.

I have been looking at an axle kit the SPEEDWAY sells. probably go that way.
not cheap but safe and this car has to handle good.-- at least 115 miles per hour in the 1/4.
I would like to see your plans for the axle.
and by the way better get the H/O done. Its good the wife is into it for ya.

some of you guys have done body off restos. and the time you put in getting the body
squared up when putting it back on the the frame.
I have started with a ext. cab S-10 frame,and have to make all new mounting points and square it up. I have the floor cut out from fire wall to trunk. with s-10 frame its
like its already narrowed in the back so I can put some BIG tires on it.

I gotta find the camera....I will be back.

Funny you ask, I really haven't worked on much till this past week.
Been to hot and this was suppose to sit till winter.
but here is some pics i took today
Front 1/2 off floor in (some what). There wont be much of a back seat/floor.
Body mounts are made and in place,got part of tilt set up done.I haven't done
any body work to it since last pics.

Wow its so darn cool to see the car! I can't wait to see it done! Thank you so much for keeping this car alive, and not just scrapping it. It means alot seeing that it was infact my first muscle car! This is my current project, just got it in primer a few weeks ago!
