1972 Cutlass Father-Son Resto
Haven't disappeared! I moved into an apartment and have a tiny little garage. I have yet to get my toolbox or anything else in there, but I will before winter. Got a new job working at a dealership as a detailer and have been working full time and going to school full time, so there hasn't been time for too much else. The cutlass is running strong!!! Nothing new yet, but I will update whenever I work on her!
I just did! I was looking for something more 70's looking. The font on that one screams 80's cutlass to me, and I don't know if I would like it. I was trying to find one with Cutlass in script, just like the emblems on the car. I've seen one pair, and since then I've racked my brain trying to find a similar pair.
It does look more new school, but that's the same font style I have on my car and it looks pretty darn nice.
EDIT: Here's a pic from this summer. No wheels on the car, but the mudflaps show well. BTW, they're the heavier rubber ones with nylon reinforcing. The OLDSMOBILE lettering is in white.

Alright! Thank you! Those really don't look bad at all. I just could not find one actually on the car for the life of me.
If only mine looked as nice as yours! That is one sweet posterior my friend ;D
No problems yet and it's starting to get cold. The new clutch disengages like it's supposed to so there isn't the constant ROAR like there used to be, I'm having some issues with the weatherstripping coming loose in some places, probably because I didn't want to use TOO much adhesive, just a simple re-glue for the sagging spots though, nothing too important to update on that.
Got a garage now so I can store her for the winter, away from the elements. I'll be sure to update next time I do something besides adding fluids or cleaning it, haha! Until then, more vanity shots :P

Car is looking good and probably looking forward to a winter all covered up. I just noticed that the hood on your car doesn't have the faux louvers. Someone must have smacked up the front end at some point and replaced it with a different hood. Nothing serious to worry about though.
I remember you pointing that out when I first started the thread! There was front end damage/ some reasoning for replacing the hood. I think the previous coat of the hood is yellow, as there are a few chips that show through. And the trunk was a blue, as that shows through as well. Definitely something went on!
Perhaps he just went to a junkyard because the parts got messed up, I do remember there was MAJOR issues with the trunk not having a key/not being opened for 10 years, which explained all the crap we found in there! As far as tracing any damage, the front seems pretty solid, the back is the only thing that was really messed with.
I'm partial to this hood anyhow! I like the lines more, as they are uninterrupted. It's a non-issue anyhow, as I plan on getting the ram air one eventually!

One of the really good things about living in IN is that most of the repro hoods are made in PA which isn't all that far away. You could easily save on shipping costs by picking it up yourself. Would be even cooler if you knew someone in PA that you could drive the car down and spend the weekend dry fitting the hood and drive it back! The all fibreglass hoods are much more affordable than a Thornton hood and I've heard good things about companies like Glasstek and VFN that make them.
Good to hear! I know the shipping on those bad boys is huge, considering...well...they're huge! lol
Bought a new car yesterday so I have something to get me around while I restore 'ol faithful. Didnt want a big huge truck that had horrible MPG, but didn't want a metro either I suppose
Now I have space to haul stuff! (Aside from the tidbit below. It was before I got the car)

Scored a front bumper with brackets from a local guy restoring his 70, it came from his 71 parts car. Had my friend bring his Wagoneer to help haul it, lol. I was going to pick up the back bumper but talked myself out of it because down the road, I want one with the dual cutouts.

Compared to my current bumper, it's an upgrade. It's not on yet because it is about 10 degrees and without my old garage that had heat, I'd freeze to death in my tiny excuse for a garage now. I could tell where that possible front end damage happened, because the current bumper is torqued a little bit, like if you twisted a stick of beef jerky. The left side sits higher and the right sits lower, and the middle is crooked. Not to mention the chrome is all but done.

) Been getting me to work at the dealership for about 2 months now through the rain, snow, and cold. As always, I'll update the next time there's something happening!

LOL Paul! Your car needs front bumper surgery??? I'm taking mine off in the Spring too so I can do some work to the front end. I also don't like the way the front bumper was installed and if I can install it like I did my new rear one? It'll turn out really nice. What I found out from the back is you spend at least a couple hours fiddling with adjustments before it finally gets snugged down. Also REALLY IMPORTANT, use the right hardware to attach everything. Regular bolts and washers don't cut it - they slip. I used the kit from ILT and it has special locking washers like OEM that bite into the metal and hold it from moving even while jacking.
When I do my bumper, I'll be documenting it too. Just have to wait for the deepfreeze to unplug in ?? April???.

Allan is the man!!
X2 On the correct bumper brace mount bolts. PM me when you're ready, I found a source for 1/3 the cost of ILT bolts, gm period Correct too. Can't remember off the top of my head but I'll dig it up when you're ready

Probably April-ish. It likes to take it's time here in Indy. Hopefully this years winter is not too bad, but they're saying it is supposed to be awful. And will do Allan! I'll be sure to look at yours before I do mine, always enjoy doing things right the first time!
And JCMC, if its just an online one, would you mind PM'ing it to me? I like bookmarking every source I can. Got a special bookmark folder for Cutlass only material, and have had a list of "to-do's" hanging on the fridge since the day I bought the car. lol.
Loving the Magnum so far! Already fiddled with it, and man those plastic trim pieces are CAKE to remove compared to a plethora of screws I'm used to, lol.

Yeah, plastic cars don't take much. Most of the parts just clip in or use plastic rivets. I had to replace a grill on my wife's car this summer. Took about 5 minutes to slide off the bumper cover. LOL it actually used metal clips and bolts to hold it to the fender but they were so cheap and small (7mm) I ugraded to some 9 mm bolts and c clips to hold everything in place. It just made me feel better but who's kidding who? The first good impact and that things toast.
How's the Magnum for fuel? I heard some of them are pretty hard on it.

Yeah! No joke! Just like that grazing I got into with the cutlass. I had tiny scratches on my fender, and the other lady had a gash down the side because it messed up all the plastic trim pieces. Easy for tinkering with though! Positives and negatives! (Those 2mm make our minds rest easy though, and that's all that matters! haha)
Pretty good on gas, mine is the 3.5. I didnt opt for the HEMI because I already have my V8 fun toy, and wanted decent gas mileage. I heard the 2.7 was really sluggish and had problems.
It's rated at 19city and 25 highway, so not too bad! My car is on longer warming up than it is when I actually drive it, my commute is about 5 minutes, so it's hard to get a proper gauge on gas mileage, lol.

Yeah, short 5 minute runs on the engine are actually harder on it and the oil too. It will also corrode the heck out of your exhaust if you continue to do that. Get it nice and hot at least once a week - 20 to 30 miles on the express-way.

No updates! She's still alive, purring every weekend and loving getting out in the snow and getting a little use. However, it has been....a little more than cold here. Around -10 today. Needless to say, I'm waiting for the spring/summer for some more work to be done. Will continue to update as time goes on

Eeeeeek, I remember when my car would be looking just like that in those kinds of weather conditions.
Once you get the hang of driving these old cars in the snow it's not all that bad. Just have to use your noggin to be the computer and understand threshold braking and steering.
Spring is just around the corner.
How's college working out?

Thanks Alex!
Allan - Well it was the car I learned how to drive in, so it feels more natural in that than my Magnum. Hell, I turn the dumb traction control off whenever I get in it because all it does is make things harder!
Spring SHOULD be around the corner! Let's hope it doesn't decide to start in May this year, Indiana always lags behind :P
College is going well! In my second semester and getting good grades, still working at the dealership too! I love that job. Get to drive Challengers and all, so it has it's perks.
I've also learned tons of different tips and tricks for detailing, and learned a lot about cars, trucks, towing, driving, and just too much to really list.

Keep up the good work in college and continue having fun and learning at the dealership too! My son is also in his second year (architecture) and last week the college sponsored a week of internship at local companies so students could experience the work world they're preparing for. He got one of the top placements and had a great learning experience in an actual working environment. He says the culture of the business world seems to be a little more relaxed than the concentrated study he's used to. (Funny, I never found that when I was working - it was go go go all day long, and sometimes weekends/evenings too just to meet a lot of tough deadlines.) The company was really pleased with his work and gave him a really nice (50.00 gift card) bonus even though they don't have to, for his contributions to their assigned tasks as well as his self sponsored initiatives on others. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a job offer after college. LOL this week is reading week here so he's spending a lot of time doing what college kids to best when they're off campus...I guess.
Spring is supposed to be here soon to. Not holding my breath though. Kind of feels like this.

That's awesome! I'm glad to hear they are giving people opportunities like that, I felt like most of those things were dead and gone. It's all about getting your foot in the door, especially nowadays! Sounds like he got a good work ethic from someone too
Although us college kids do enjoy a break every now and again!
Interestingly enough I've always been interested in architecture! My dad and I have designed houses in CAD and other programs and just love the design aspect. We're more designers as opposed to builders though. :P
That pic speaks the truth! Although poor Florida has been getting snow too!
Is this accurate for all you guys up there? It's pretty true here, haha

Keep up the good work at College. CAD can be fun just to play with, I've designed parts for my car, most of which I'll never even think of making. Although I did do some rough design work for the gauge panel I ended up having a friend make, just to see what layout I preferred.
Keep enjoying the car until it gets warm enough to work on it.
LOL, yup I've seen that commercial before too. I think it was for Fountain tire or something. Buuut, we just don't have Crown Vics for police cars anymore. Now it's the Charger or SUVs and some trucks. Obviously neither of those guys has a clue about driving in winter....
Yes, Graeme has a lot of talent in Revit Auto Desk (which has several CAD applications) and Sketchup which creates some great 3D renderings. His architectural program is more than just design though - he has to learn about structural loading, materials and builds. That means a lot of time also required in the field to get practical first hand experience. I think it's a long journey, but at least he's down past the first mile...
Paul - I think I saw that pic of the jack knifed artics! Messy messy messy. They do have an over ride switch that allows the driver to temporarily disengage the torsion rods for straightening the coach. Has to be done within 45 seconds though before the anti jack knife feature kicks back in. Once it goes beyond it's specified normal bend, the linkages freeze to prevent further bend.

I've used Sketch-Up as well! I'm only the design part, and that took me awhile to learn and I'm not even career-level proficient. I couldn't imagine the work he puts into the the design part, PLUS the structural side, along with materials required, codes you need to know, and all the legalities too. But sounds like he's got a solid base to build from!
Also, I can't believe I forgot to post this awhile back. An indie film maker here approached me and asked if I would mind having my car in his movie to which I replied "OF COURSE NOT." haha. Since I've been out of high school I haven't been able to scratch my movie-making itch so it was definitely an awesome experience!

Well! Blew my radiator in the magnum due to a cooling fan breaking and shredding it up. Got parts on the way and am fixing it soon. Been driving the cutlass around and she's running nicely; survived a rough winter!
Was out garage sale looking yesterday and picked up this beauty! It's from earlier models, but it still looks absolutely gorgeous. Anyone know exactly which? From what I've researched I'm guessing mid/late sixties?

Not 100% sure but it looks like it could be from a 69/70 full size car. If it is, I believe there's another component (lots of us call the amplifier) that plugs into the back (lots of pin connectors in a circular pattern). If it needs that and you don't have it? You won't get any sound out of it.
Thanks olds! It's funny the newer car breaks, and my backup is some good 'ol muscle, haha. I will say, I MUCH prefer working on the cutlass, tons more space and things make sense.
Allan, thanks!! From what I found when I searched the model #, this is the closest I got..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Ster...item4864f50a70
The ***** are different, and it looks to lack the adjustment controls. However the side is identical, as well as the sliding "olds" am/fm switcher, and the preset buttons are the same as well. Later models seem to have a little "notch" that goes horizontally through them. Hard to get a precise answer on what it came from, but it's cool learning about all the different variations of radios!

The one you posted also has a different faceplate than the one you have. Yours is rounded on the corners, which is why I thought maybe 69/70 full size.
Have you looked at this:

I know it's serious money, but it appears to have more flexibility in what you can play with it. Bonus - it looks original and you can use modern speakers.

I was just wondering about it so I would know, it's not going in my car but it certainly was a nice find!
That radio is awesome!!! I couldn't see the price, I'm guessing at least $300 though, it would certainly look right at home in my car, and be an easy tie-in to the speakers I already have.

uh, nope not 300. Closer to 565.00 .....you still there??? Hope that didn't give you a heart attack. I'm seriously thinking about that setup too as it looks very stock (except for the blue backlight) Nice thing is I can easily run some nice (better than OEM) speakers from it. I already have 2 rears, 2 door mounted, but I'd also like to find a way of hooking up 2 back seat speakers too. I know - overkill!
The other thing I was thinking is that for people who are missing the tuning ***** and such, this company obviously has gone to the trouble to reproduce them.
I posted this radio on the site a while back. Here's the link to it. What's New but Olds looking???

GEEZ. That's almost a third of what I payed for my entire car! haha. It definitely is nice, and fits nice in a resto-mod, and would still be at home in an all original car as well! Down the road I might consider it as well, it would fit nice with a classic look yet modern system.
That isn't overkill! It's what I want to do. Currently I only have the 2 in the rear, and it doesn't sound good at all! I want to do some in my doors as well, and maybe throw some tweeters somewhere for some nice highs. But I might opt out of the door speakers and do some in the kick panels because I've heard good things about them there.

Just keeping the thread alive! She's still getting out any having fun! (Took her to 4th of July fireworks, above) Still runs like a champ!! Haven't had to do any major work besides some fluid changes and adjusting my carb a little and addressing a squeak in my fan. I haven't forgot about you guys!
Will update when some big work happens!!!
