1971 442 New purchase Cali car unfinished project, project

Hello all bought another car oh joy i cant wait for the fun!
Picked up a 1971 442 from cali.
Owner has it Since 81. He also had a 1970 442 he sold in dec/jan maybe another member? it is burgundy car with 60k went to east coast some where, guys name is John.
The gentlemen is tired of Cali politics getting up in age and selling his cars and moving had a 65 442 also thats he sold recently.
The car is code 19 ebony black with Black bucket seat interior. has an 8 track too
W25 Hood Auto The Owner did some work over the years Engine rebuild, stripped paint epoxy primed Suspension, fuel tank cleaned, he accumulated many parts seat covers, door panels for interior, weather strip emblems etc.
This one has a nice dash as far as i can tell, Needs sport wheel in my opinion and those SS1's are going back on for sure.
Here are some pics from the buyer still in cali waiting on transport.
First car im buying that has a "True Pink slip".

Looks like air shocks on the rear. I had those back in the 80s to keep the rear from sagging due to worn out springs. Made for a rougher ride but easy to level the car when transporting lots of friends and gear. At the time I had no idea a set of springs were cheap and easy to install.

Yes I saw the Air shocks too.
remember this guy has had the car since 81
also more importantly is the view of the boxed control arms!

Looks like a good project. Congrats!
A friend of mine said "always start with a car that has as little rust as possible and it will make the project much easier and less expensive"

No, some of us used coil over load leveler shocks, with and/ or added station wagon springs. Air shocks suck...

Air shockS are fine , you just can’t fill them up too much.
they do serve a purpose to lift the car for huge tires lol.
I should have said a lot of people did.
not for everyone, have not used them in years tho.

JOHNNYOLDS442 - I saw on the "Good Morning Thread" that your 71 442 project car is on the way from Cali. Congrats and good luck with the project! Keep us apprised with some pics as you move through the project, it's always great to see the transformation as the car is brought back to life.

JOHNNY - Glad you're able to get a jump start on several of the parts you'll need for your resto. I thought it was quite the coincidence that the previous owner threw in a set of SS1's with the deal. When I bought my 67 last November, the owner threw in a complete set of like new SS1's with like new BF Goodrich T/A 235 60r 15's on them (pic). Right now my car has 17" REV polished aluminum torque thrust style wheels on it. About a week ago I ran a poll on the "Good morning thread" and asked the guys which wheels they liked better and they overwhelmingly preferred the SS1's, so I'm going to give them a try. I had to order the proper steel shell lug nuts because the previous owner did not give me a set. I was able to get a nice looking set from JEGS. I included a pic of one of the packages so you could look up the part number if you need to order some. Just curious what size tires you're putting on your car, I couldn't read the tire size in the pic you posted? Again, good luck with the project!

Thanks, mine are 14’s, the only size closest to Factory 225/70-14.
Its the only size I use when running 14’s.
It’s the height that fits the wheel well best.
60’s look too small.
The guy I bought the car from was moving so he gave me a few extra items.
The wheels , extra back window glass, 69 tail lights,

Nice score on your 442! Looks like a good solid car. That "bent" oil filler tube is '68 only along with your intake & carb. It has the divorced choke coil mounted to the intake last used in '69. I also noticed that your a/c compressor brackets are wrong for an a-body, they're for a big car. Did you check the vin #s stamped on the block?, That will tell you the year but it looks like you have a '68 engine from an 88 or 98. '68 engines will have C heads.

Yes i know it is not the orig Engine the Gentleman said he had it rebuilt to 70 specs's. 10:1/2 to 1
Why would you say its from an 88 or 98 without providing you any numbers just because of a bracket?

I am wondering how the center of the stone shield was broken. Seems as if the bumper would have to be pushed in quite a bit for that to happen.

Yep, the center of the bumper is pushed in but hard to tell from this picture if that's enough to break the stone shield. It's easy to straighten the bumper - I had to do that on both my 70 Supreme and the 71 convertible. Just need to pull the center out with a come-along, chain attached to a tree, etc.

The owner left bumper loose that’s not his fault that the other guy hit the car though so thank God he did leave it loose Otherwise it would be bent otherwise it would be bent because it pushed in enough to crack the surround.

That "C" on your engine stamping shows Southgate California as the assembly plant. According to the service manual that plant produced Delmonts & Delta 88s for Olds
