Ok here is my latest rescue a 1970 Rallye 350 F85 4spd Post!! I made the deal a few months ago and finally was able to bring her home. The previous owner had it about 13yrs. He bought it as a running driving car and started to tear it down at work to redo it. But then someone at work decided the employees couldn't do personal projects after hours and everyone had to take them home. So he put it back together sorta and drug her home to his yard and she never was touched again. She has been sitting in his yard for about 8-9yrs. F85 4spd, 3.91 posi, bench seat manual everything. Numbers matching engine and I believe transmission but I still have to confirm the trans. Sadly the 3.91 rear is gone but it has a supposed 3.23 pegleg according to code. But hopefully has a surprise since it sports a repro W-27 cover. She is solid but will need fender patches, alittle quarter work and the floors redone from a previous hack job. Dash is perfect and trunk is rust free. This car is also documented with a broadcast card but no W45 on it. Theory I believe is they were never stamped with the W45 code from the factory since it didn't change anything from standard Cutlass offerings. I also have the original order form signed and dated from 3-23-70. The car matches the order form exactly including factory trailer wiring minus the rearend swap. The car retains its original fenders, oai air cleaner setup, ram air hood, sport mirrors and 3 stud GM factory wing. Rear bumper still has its ground strap as well. The motor turned by hand so shouldn't take much to get her to fire up. I'm excited for this project. Enjoy some photos.
Very nice find. I am always happy to see a car like this one saved before it sinks into the ground. I have always like the Rallye 350. This will make a nice car with the 4 speed. I hope you do a thread on the rebuild.
Thanks for the compliments. Yes thankfully this one was in a drier climate and didnt rust out from the bottom up. Its needs some rust repairs yes but nothing crazy. I'm going to try and get it to fire this wk and see if she comes alive. I paid enough to cover the parts value of what I got so both parties were happy with the transaction.
I'm stumbled across the car by chance on ebay through random olds part searching. Funny thing is exactly a year ago from the day I made this deal I was looking at a much less complete Rallye 350 F85 4spd post project. So I'll take it as meant to be that I own one of these. ;-) If this rain would go away i could go outside and tinker with her. There is no room in the garage for this one so she sits on the drive covered with a tarp.
So the rain finally went away and I was able to tinker with the Rallye's engine. I pulled the plugs and put some ATF in the cylinders, had to redo the battery cables terminals, drained oil to make sure not contaminated, pulled dist to spin oil pump and turn engine by hand. Now before you pull a distributor make sure your engine has a timing tab! I found out after the fact. I installed a spare points dist with new cap/rotor/wires/points I had in the garage. Got lucky on my first attempt that she was close enough to sputter and with some movement she fired up. Original carb was too clogged to use so I swapped the one from my 66 onto her. She runs pretty good for sitting dormant for years. This week I'll do a oil change and add some ATF to help clean out the motor and stop the ticking I'm hearing. Was happy that nothing burned up in the wiring once I hooked up the battery for the first time! Once I change the other fluids in the drivetrains and cleanup the brake system I maybe able to take her for a spin in the neighborhood. Once the mouse nests and old dirty/rusty water blew out the exhaust she sounded nice.
I worked in her abit more. Went to change the fuel pump because oil smelled like fuel figuring the diaphragm when bad but the aftermarket spectre pump wouldn't fit due to the height of 90° in line hitying alt bracket so I had to return it and order another a different manufacturers that made close to original. I confirmed the muncie is the original and the rearend is a 3.23 pegleg as its coded. I also dropped the gas tank but didnt find a build sheet. The tank is salvageable with some good cleaning inside and out. The pickup tube just needs a new sock as its brittle. I'm going to blow out the fuel line so I can book it back up once tank is cleaned out. I ordered a dwell meter so I can set it up right. Once I get a timing tab I'll reset the timing and dwell again to see if we can get it right and running better. My Jensen tape deck player and dash speaker work perfectly too. ;-)
