1967 442

I've been playing with Oldsmobiles since the early 1980's but it wasn't until about 7 years ago that my career began providing much disposable income. Since then I've been dragging home project and parts cars on a regular basis. I've decided to make all the project cars into drivers then I'll go back and get serious about what I'm going to do with them. So this thread is about a 1967 442 that I purchased from a guy who started restoring it, but due to health issues couldn't finish it. I first saw this car about 8 years ago when it was complete. By the time I re-found it the owner had removed and no longer had any of the interior including the dash or front and rear glass. Rather than rebuild the 400 engine he used a 425 block with 455 internals, then put on the 400 heads. I guess he couldn't find the correct color for the engine so he painted it Ferd blue. It has a newer TH400 transmission and a 3.08 Type O posi rear end. It came from the factory as a fairly stripped down car with bench seat and column shift, power steering and power drum brakes. It was originally Tahoe Turquoise interior and exterior just like my 4 door, but now has a black paint job that's shedding the clear coat.

At this point I'm thinking about staying with black paint and for the time being installing used black door panels and seats. If I keep the exterior black I'd like to go with a red interior as I've seen that a few times and believe it really looks sharp. It has a factory 442 hood but there's problems with it. The liner has a pretty good gap with the skin, and the only way I could fit an air cleaner on the carb was by using a Toronado intake. I've not verified which motor mounts he used so that may also be part of the clearance issues too. I purchased new windshields and had them installed at a local shop. I replaced the heater core as I didn't want to install new carpet with that being iffy. There is surface rust on the floor pan and a previous owner drilled several small drain holes in it. I was showing the car to another member here when he pointed out the dry and cracked door glass gaskets. That is likely the source of water getting into the car and I need to replace those before next winter rolls around. The window channels were very nice and there's no rust in the lower body. The previous owner is from Southern California and I suspect this car may have spent much of it's life in a dry climate. Eventually I'd like to rebuild the correct 400 engine and install that back in the car.

I'm attaching several photos with the introduction of this car. I'll post updates as I complete work on it.

John, looks like a really good starting point on a project. No rust is good rust, to say the least. always loves that body style.

Nice looking project car John. Black with red interior would be a cool color combo on this car. Would you keep the bench seat? Getting a project to driver status works better for me as well.

I've seen GM hoods that came loose from the frame like your's. (I have one or two) Usually the adhesive lets loose from the sheetmetal rather than the frame. I've done a little research and can't find any adhesive that I thought could be used to replicate the original. I guess you're left with trying to reglue the original adhesive or make a "spacer" and glue it on both sides. Either way I think cleaning the sheetmetal and frame (or the original hockey puck adhesive) is the biggest problem. I wonder if the Cheby guys have a solution for this. Naw they just buy a repro. (maybe the 55-57 guys) This might be one job for a restoration shop. Maybe they have a solution. Or... maybe a seperate thread in the paint & body forum here. Someone may know the answer.

Keep us posted on the progress towards driver status.

Don

Definitely put that one in the barn until you can close it all up. Looks like a really straight body. Too bad about the interior missing, but you probably have tons of parts stored away for just this occasion. You'll have to paint is blue though....to match your user ID 2blu 442

Thanks for the encouragement guys! When I looked at the car I thought it should be an easy one to finish... I just have to make the time for it

Hi John,
My name is Pattie I see that you have a 67 442 project car. My husband years ago also bought a 67 442, since then he no longer has the shell of the car but he did save many parts including the hood, fenders, grill, all chome, 442 emblems, both rear and front bumpers back seat and also the two bucket seats, seat belts, headlight casing and many more parts .I'm writing to you to see if you would be interested in these parts.I do have pictures of the parts. You can contact me at russo0203@sbcglobal.net, I live in Danbury, Ct
Thank you

Hi Pattie
Email sent. I would encourage you to create a parts wanted thread. I'm sure there's several members here that need parts for their cars. John
