I ran the starter longer than I like and still did not get oil to the top of the head. I was almost out of starting fluid so was not able to test if it would push oil at an idle. I will try to run the motor tonight. If that does not do it I will have to decide how far I am taking this project or if I am just going to resell as it sits.
It is probably ok but this step is a good precaution. The best way to pre oil is to pull the distributor and use a drill to turn the oil pump. At this point I'd pour oil on the rockers trying to shoot some up into the pushrod rocker contact points, start it for 15 seconds or so and see what happens. Cranking speed can take a long time to get oil up there. Don't give up, again it's probably fine if it isn't tapping.
Fired the motor again last night and finally got oil to the heads...no rattle or major sound from the lifters. But I did have a couple of rocker arms that did not appear to be getting as much oil as the others.
They all started getting oil in stages so I am assuming it just didn't build great pressure at a low idle
Parts ordered this weekend for valve covers, carb rebuild etc.
Started the car using a test tank this weekend through the fuel pump. It started and idled great. I cannot believe the carb was not full of gunk after 30 years.
Consider installing an inline fuel filter just before the fuel pump. Haven't worked on one of those carbs in years but the carb inlet nut doesn't look like an original type. Someone may have had trouble with it. An inline filter before the pump will catch debris from the tank and lines protecting the carb rebuild. The OE filters were small and couldn't hold much debris before clogging.
New valve cover gaskets...waiting on rebuild kit for carb. I think the thermostat is stuck so will address that soon. Also need to decide what to do with the brakes. Disco conversion on the front and drum rears is what I think I am going to do but can't decide if I will add a power booster or not
1. Found out the ignition is ok but the neutral safety switch at the console is acting up.
2. Drained old gas from tank. Will be placing filter in line before the fuel pump and getting rid of my engine bay mounted test tank.
3. Replaced thermostat
4. Started on Back brakes. Side 1 completed last night, will try and get the other done tonight.
5. I am going to just order new pads, springs etc for the front to get it in a driving condition and leave the drums for now.
My daughter really wants to drive this to the local car show on June 10th.... trying to get there but not sure we will.
Well we missed the car show by about 6 hours. I was bleeding the brakes last minute and could not get one side to work. Ended up being a bad line.
But we were able to cruise the neighborhood in the car on Saturday and Sunday. Brakes need another round of bleeding, need to time the car, new cap, etc.
Now we have to decide if we are keeping or flipping this car. Anybody have an idea of what it might be worth if we flip it?
