Is this correct shifter for 69 automatic

Purchased this shifter with console from a friends friend that i plan to use on my cutlass 350 turbo then 400 turbo later this summer or winter whichever come first ? haha. Its was suppose to come out of 69 cutlass, console looks correct for 69 but shifter im questioning. My issue is looking at it and operating it, it appears to work like its for a 2 speed tranny, low or 1st gear is all the way down and it has detent to get into low, but when you shift forward to 2nd then what i think is further up its neutral the you have to detent to get to reverse and then park is the simple one.?? maybe it will make more sense once I it get it mounted just didnt want to go thru that if I didnt understand it first. I do have a spare tranny maybe that will help if someone doesnt have any ideas on here.

without having mine in front of me i think you are right. i think there should be one more step in the back. the wide spot in the middle is drive on the back side and neutral on the front side.

That piece with the detents unbolts and you replace it with one for a three speed...otherwise it is the same...

It could have come from a 67 or 68,with a 2-speed.All you would need to do is change the detent piece, with one from a 69-72.The chrome handle & floor bracket are the same.

The detent on your shifter is for a 2 speed automatic. Attached is a photo of a shifter with a 3 speed detent plate. As mentioned, find the 3 speed plate and bolt it in place of the existing one.

Thanks Alan. It didn't look that way when it was removed from the car but with a little work, a new neutral safety switch and new chrome on the handle assembly, it turned out pretty nice. The base was bead blasted and painted with Eastwood Spray Gray, the detent was sprayed flat black and new hardware was installed. Too bad it's not visible when the console is in place. Oh well, I'll know it was done.
