There is insulation material packed under the dash which has become dry, crumbly and messy. Any time that I reach under to work on the wiring, the stuff rains down in pieces. Is this stuff necessary? Can it be removed from underneath and replaced? Does someone make a replacement insulation? It's not on the firewall, its directly under the dash.

 

I have seen it made for some cars but not others. The major suppliers (Fusick, OPG, Legendary) will have it if it is made for your car.
If not, you can use the self-adhesive foam dynaliner (or other brand) insulation and make your own. HAMM36 on this forum did that. If the dash is disassembled, then replacement is pretty easy. Since I did not pull my dash all apart, I left that nasty stuff there, which may not have been the best idea.......

 

Thanks Rob. I also hope to not have to take apart the dash. If I just dug all that crud out of there, would that cause any problems? Does it really need to be replaced?

 

No real issue in removing it, aside from the mess. Hold a shop vac hose under it as you peel it away to help capture the dust.
The purpose was to help insulate for temperature and noise. Since it was so delapitated (sp?) anyway you probably will not notice much (if any) difference in heat or noise gain. When you do ever redo the dash, you can add some new.

 

Thanks again. Per your earlier message, I looked up a replacement on Legendary. Already ordered. I'll pull the old. Work on the wiring. Then put the new back.
