No Headrests to headrests

Is it possible to install headrests on 68 bucket seats that don't have any? I don't know what's inside as far as provisions or if there is any.

Hi Kevin
I've never done it, but believe you could. The 1968 seat backs have the metal frame that you could put the plastic head rest mounts into. But I don't know if you could use the more common 1969-72 head rests or need the rarer 1967-68 head rests. Below are some pictures, check them out and if you have any questions let me know. John

Here's a 1968 seat back with the cover removed.

Then here's a 1969 seat back with the cover removed. Note the black plastic tubes for the head rest rods to go into.

Then here's a set of 1967 seats with the early style head rests. I believe these are the same ones used on 1968's. Note how they fit over the seatback more than the 69-72

Great information, thanks. I wanted to make some 68's look like '69s but I had forgotten that the seat release button is different. Idk may still try it.

I'm going to add the head-rests on my '68 when I get around to recovering the seats. I got the installation kit & headrests from Ecklers chevelle. The kit comes with the 2 plastic tubes & the '70-'72 style latches for 1 seat,so order the '70-72 headrests to match the latches. The few '68s I've seen with the rare A81 optional factory headrests looked like the newer '69 up style ,not the pointy'66-67 type. I will say the aftermarket headrests are just ok!& they only come in black. If you can try to find a nice original GM pair from someone. The GM originals have real vinyl that was formed over a foam core, the repops are just hi-density black foam. Like I said they look just ok, not great! I was actually thinking of spraying them with SEM black vinyl paint & a satin clear top coat to try to give them a more factory look. SEM products are awesome, the stuff wears like iron & doesn't peel of flake off!

Yes you can absolutely add them to 68 seats. They take the same HW & Tubes that were used from 69-72.

The 68 had unique lock bezels, but the 69 ones will work.

Differences between 69-72 headrests & locks had to do with which side the detentes were on the headrest legs. The repop ones come notched for all options.
