What's this light for?

What's this light for?

On my '63 Dynamic there is a small square green light in the centre of the ashtray. I have seen it before in picures, manuals etc but nothing to say what it's for. So, my question is, What's it for?

I believe it's supposed to illuminate the ashtray so you can smoke while driving at night.

Yep, The green lens lets you know at night where to pull to open the ash tray and when its opened the bulb shines down so ya dont miss the tray with a butt or ashes.
