What radio is this for...origanally.

I have a 1962 olds 98 that had no radio in it from the factory. This radio was in it as the first owner put it in the car. My question is what cars used this radio and what is it even worth? It works great but i have have no intentions of keeping it in the car as its not an original feature. Its a AM radio also

#982029 is a 1962 GM radio - Is the "OLDSMOBILE" part of the face plate or part of the radio?

Black pushbuttons usually indicate Chevrolet or Buick though some Olds AM sets had them. A Buick radio will usually have B U I C K spelled out on the pushbuttons.

My guess is it is a generic GM-Delco dealer installed radio. Since a factory installed radio was an (often significant) extra cost option back then, dealers made some money installing them after the sale.

Those are definitely 1962 Olds *****. If it works, leave it. Your only other factory option is a WonderBar. Olds did not offer AM-FM until 1963 and the 63-4 nosepiece is completely different from the 1962 dash.

I suppose you could have a 1962 AM set converted to AM-FM with CD changer capability.

While all things are possible of course, it is a little hard to understand a top of the line 98 being ordered sans radio. The original purchaser must have been an interesting character?

Not really Dave- I've seen a lot of luxury versions that came without radios. Guess the original owners didn't want to listen to the airwave wasteland.

Though I usually see more Buicks without a radio.

Yellow's info confirms it's 62 Olds. 3200= Dynamic 88, 3500= Super 88, 3600= Starfire, 3800= Ninety Eight.

eddi, just wondering how you determined it came without radio? Think you said your grandpa bought it new or near new?

My granpa was the second owner in the mid 70's. I looked at the rpo codes, assesories codes seems not to have the codes for air condtioning or am radio. This car had both air conditioning and a Am radio when my grandpa got the car. He use to take the radio out at ever car show he was in, where point for originality were given.
I also have the Air conditioning controls that attatch under the dash. Same sort of face plate as the radio.

How could I make sure Im looking up the correct codes??? For the Accesories?
I dont like the idea of a AM radio in the car if its not original, Its not like im listening to AM radio. If it was Fm it would be a different story.

If anyone else wants to decode their radio (58-75), I have found this website to be a wealth of knowlege http://www.wonderbarman.com/codes.html. Just scroll down to your radio number.

Hope this helps.
Paul.
Thanks for the tips! Im still trying to find out if it was in the car from factory or not.If it was dealer installed would it be considered to to original for the car?? Just woundering

In a word, yes.

It's the factory radio for the car, and radios etc were installed by the dealer after the sale all the time, so that makes this radio perfectly acceptable for your car.
