Red face Trunk question, ugh...

Ok, I've been dealing with my trunk torsion bars for a while now. Finally had time to put them back in. I realized that (1) the previous owner didn't have them in right and (2) I can't figure out what exactly "right" is.

I have a 71 Cutlass Convertible. Here's the issue - does the end with the that goes into the adjustment slots go "through" the hinge mount or "behind" it? Or should the U-shaped part go through or behind?

Does anyone have a decent pic of what this should look like on a 70-72 convertible? Others might be similar, but I don't know.

And yes, while trying to get them in place, I did knock out the trunk support and then get knocked out by the falling trunk lid.

Ok, I know it is a dumb question... I was so sure it would be obvious that I didn't even bother to take pics of how it was originally done, even though that wasn't right.

BUT - isn't there anyone else that has dealt with this, specifically on a convertible???

Thank you so much! I think that will help me a lot. I may need to ask for one more pic, but I wanna try this out on my trunk. My hinge mounts are scratched up badly because the previous owner had it just wedged in there and nowhere near what you've got there...
