temperature light

what does it mean when the temperature is flashing. My olds 98 does it for a few minutes after starting. I am referring to the temperature that is displayed to show what the temperature outside is

My 66 Olds 88 does this too. It's simple for my case. As the block warms up, there's a medium temp that the gauge reacts to as between warm/cold. So, when the gauge is stuck between hot/cold, it'll flash a few times before turning off. Then again, this is my 1966.. your application may differ.
