One problem that has bugged me in my car since I bought it is that the belt buckles ding the console if people aren't careful. Most Starfire consoles I've seen have this kind of damage to the chrome and/or the aluminum console trim, so I consider it a design flaw. Maybe this is a problem for Cutlasses too.
I recently saw these belt buckle retention clips at classic industries. They're listed as Impala parts, but I never knew they existed until last week.
Chevy clips, but they'll retain your Olds belt buckles too.
It was a quick little project. I just reused two existing #8 screw holes in my console, but I had to back them with 2 J nuts to handle and spread the weight of the clip and buckle instead of just screwing into 55 year old plastic. I used #8 x 1 1/4" screws or maybe 1 1/2"
Here are a couple of shots for fun: Looks factory to me
With buckle clipped in: Neat clean belt buckle storage from in front of the driver's seat.
Here's a drivers seat view: Now maybe my console won't get dinged...
They move a little bit on the screw, but I kind of like them angled back instead of straight up & down.
Sometimes the little projects are fun. Hope this helps some of you
I believe the '68 Chevelle also used those metal hangers. At some point ('69 or '70?) the Chevelle went to these rectangular plastic cups that also screwed to the side of the console. They have two recesses, one for the lap belt buckle and the other for the shoulder harness. They were the same color as the console itself. Another viable option.
