SMS Upholstery

If anyone is thinking of ordering from this place be careful, It took me over 4 weeks to get a delivery after they said it was being shipped and they have owed me a refund which Im still trying to collect. It even took 4 weeks just to get a sample! that should have been my clue.

Only heard good things about them. Never bought any material from them, but I still have some sample swatches for the '65 Parchment vinyl used in my '65 Jetstar I...they found a perfect match for my interior, sending a sample that took into account "pearlesence" (sp?) in my car's vinyl having long ago faded away. I never bought the material, on account of my being cheap and the fact that my car has only one seam split on the driver's seat (which I solved for now with some Gorilla tape affixed from the underside).

They may have taken a while to send those samples, cannot honestly recall. I hope / think they will make good in your case.

I have heard a lot of negative comments on them from some other forums I belong to.

Same here....good comments about the products themselves but bad things about attitude and customer service. I think some of these places have a lot of hard-to-find things and figure they can get away with the lack of service.....who knows??

I have yet to order from them but they shipped out samples that matched perfectly with my original interior down to the grain in a timely manner, which is way better than other sources samples I've received that wasn't even close with color or texture. The only kicker is to pay them extra to do the work or order the material from them and pay a known quality upholsterer to do the job you deserve for your money. IMHO

unfortunately they're one of those companies you sort of "have to" deal with - they always come through in the end, but at their pace and their rules....us '50s guys definately don't have much of a choice...

I dealt with SMS and was more than satisfied. But then I knew going in it would take time, and that I would need to stay in constant contact with them. I did so by emailing them monthly for a status report. My emails were responded to promptly and not viewed as a nuisance. I sent my door panels to them in Oct. and and they were returned in Jan. Simply cannot beat the workmanship!

I heard about long lead times also. However I heard that the product is great!
I bet most of their stuff is custom made to order, so that will certainly add to the time.

They sell stuff that Legendary does not do. SMS can match almost any American car of a huge range of years. Legendary does not even make stuff for 4doors - only 2-doors.

I have gotten exact match vinyl from them in the past quickly and received samples quickly. Emails have been answered quickly for the most part. I just sent them my door panels for reproduction and asked that they be done in August. They told me to state that when the order was placed. So I will wait till July and give them a call for a progress report. My only concern was they charged my visa for the full amount when I placed the order.... A deposit would seem in order at least till they begin making the panels and a completion date given would be more to my liking before charging the full amount.

SMS is a good company, but as noted, be aware up front that delivery will take a long time, particularly if you are buying the molded door panels. Their products are all made to order, and that takes time. Don't expect them to have door panels or seat upholstery for every single obscure model in every single obscure color sitting on the shelf.

I bought their vinyl for the 2 tone buckets in my 1962 f-85. It was a little off color to begin with and it's changing quickly and luckily more to the correct color. I wouldn't have expected it to change but it is. I didn't have any problems with delivery though. I had an upholsterer locally do the work.

Adding my positive experience to the pool

SMS supplied the vinyl for my 1967 Sports Coupe.
They retained my request for samples from Oct. '09 until I ordered in June '11.

It took several weeks for delivery, but it was the match I needed.
The delay was not unexpected from some feedback on this site.

A local trim shop performed the work.
I would definitely use SMS again.

The completed seats are shown in this link.

As noted above, SMS may be your only choice if you want absolutely authentic materials. If your car was a cheap model and the original stuff didn't hold up well at all, you might take another approach, even if the appearance isn't quite correct. If Legendary offers what you need, they are a good alternative. SMS sent me samples quickly, but later I decided to go with stronger naugahyde rather than the original flimsy F85 material. I have never heard of anyone getting cheated by SMS; just complaints that they took a while. Given the time frame for a typical restoration, that just means "pushing the button" and ordering your interior parts early rather than waiting until the rest of the car is almost finished.

To update a little, I did hear from SMS after I sent a Email at July's beginning. They responded quickly and said August should be doable for my door panels for the 67 Sport Coupe. If I dont hear back by mid September I will contact them for info. I dont need the panels just want them done so its one more thing finished.

Seat material arrived today, but door panels didnt. Both were supposed to be coming. Called and was told door panels are in production. So far the customer service has sucked, which is what others are saying.

I just sent them an Email today about my door panels which I think I ordered in Feb or March and that is when my visa was charged the full amount. I told them I needed the panels by August and have been mailing them regularly. The last mail said that an August completion date was prob gonna happen. Today I sent them a mail stating that my customer is waiting for the panels so I could install them and his car could be completed and at the least I needed a date when the panels would arrive. They answered my mail promptly saying another week or 2 would be needed....

I have heard that they take a long time to make, but the quality is good.

A friend of mine ordered a headliner for a Pinto wagon back in October and was quoted 2-4 weeks. He ended up getting it in one week!

Maybe they are slower at that time? Perhaps. Many people want their parts in the summer, when they are doing the work when it is warmer. In TX, winter work is
almost better.

Being they are a well-known mail-order company, serving the whole country, that makes everything on demand (no stocking finished products) I can see how they can get behind. Classic Auto Air is similar.

Try to order stuff from them well in advance.
However I think they should only charge you when they ship...

Our 54 Super 88 project requires 3 fabrics for the seats. SMS shipped two of the fabrics right away. We've been waiting since November '11 for the remaining fabric. Getting nervous now. Spring is coming!

What do they say to you when you call them?

By the way I did get my door panels but not on schedule. I sent them an original and said I wanted an exact match. Mine were silightly 2 tone unless they faded as such (doubt it). The new ones are nice and look correct but are NOT 2 tone. They are the only game in town as far as I know for heat stamping vinyl so I guess I cant complain too much.

SMS Update

I ordered headliner fabric and windlace and received it promptly. But, we're still waiting for that seat fabric ordered back in Nov '11. Weekly calls don't seem to do any good. It could easily have been hand-woven by now.

Did they say the reason for the delay? The seats would have been more involved to make, so that maybe one reason. When you do get it, they should be nice!

I'm having the seats sewn locally. Fabrics were ordered last November and two of the three materials arrived promptly. SMS told us they ran out of the third fabric and that they are having more made. So, we're apparently at the mercy of the mill.

Despite weekly status checks, I don't know that SMS is doing anything to speed up the process. If push comes to shove, we put the seats back in the car and enjoy driving it until the fabric finally arrives!

Good news! Earlier this week I learned SMS received our fabric from the mill. Now, it's having a backing applied. We might get it yet! Tired of waiting.

If this includes seats, carpet, door panels, headliner and everything related, done RIGHT, then I see the price is reasonable. It better include good materials, too.

I've oredered from them twice, fabric only. Both times they had the right material, some of it date coded from the year used. Also both times, there was a delay in getting samples and/or material ordered. First time was long ago, for a '74 H/O. And the second time was recently for a '75 H/O. The '74 had 2 specific types of vinyl, and the '75 has 2 vinyl and 2 fabric patterns used. I can't wait to see my new seats!
