I have a 72 cutlass supreme, here is situation. I addressed this before but I don't think I explained the problem in enough detail. The front seat belts work fine but I don't think the rear seatbelts have been used in quite some time. the female end of all the rear seat belts are stuck to the point where I cannot adjust the belt to fit individual people. How can I loosen the belts so that they adjust easily without damaging/staining them?

 

You will have to disassemble the female end and clean the smutz off of the serrated bar (or roller) to allow smooth movement of the webbing. They can be very stubborn to get apart, heavy screwdrivers usually do the trick.

 

To disassemble them, pry the lower portion of tabs up on the rear of the buckle so they disengage from the lower buckle housing, then lift the cover. It will rotate forward and up to come off like a clam shell. The pic below shows the tabs. They are hard to pry so don't be afraid to use a bit of force on them.

Hi was just looking at my belts, they say Hamill rcf-65 on housing, is this the same one you are referring to?

 

the female end is supposed to freely move back and forth correct? the only thing the button for is to disengage the buckle? I took the buckle apart per your instructions and took a tooth brush to the roller but the belt still doesn't move freely I think the belts are just too dry to move if I took them out to clean what would you recommend I soak them in to loosen them up without staining them?

 

The female end should move smoothly, but sometimes only if you bend it and touch or point the bottom side of the buckle towards or to the belt. The belt kind of locks in the normal position, you can pull it tighter and it will lock on your waist. But to loosen, you have to do what I said. It's a simple thing, but we are spoiled by auto retractors now. The belt itself also has to be supple and clean. If it's stiff then it won't move easily.
