Remove center consul on my 68 Cutlass

Feeling dumb…. Can’t find this in my assembly manual, though it must be in there. Trying to figure out how to remove the chrome ‘t” on the shifter, to get my console back in, in one piece. Any ideas?

Tap out the spring pin with a hammer and small punch. And the diagram that shows you this is on Page 7-28 (Figure 7-28) in your 1968 Chassis Service Manual

I actually started to do that and then decided that must not be the way. Seem too complex for such a trivial item… plus the pin did not easily pull out once I got pliers on it… try again tomorrow Thanks

By the way….

Should my shifter engage without the keys in ignition? As I was removing the center console I was able to move the shifter, the keys were on the floor

1969 was the first model year that the shifter locked with the steering column. 1968-older did not.
