PUI vs Legendary

PUI vs Legendary
Hello,
I'm in the process of shopping for an upholstery kit for my 68 cutlass and I found out most companies carry PUI as their kits and I was wondering what the quality was like or if Legendary is a better brand I know they offer a lifetime warranty. Also what's the factory headliner style for my car basket weave or ribbed? Thanks
John

I've heard lots of good things about both. Some of the guys on this forum prefer Legendary though and I've seen the pics of their cars when done - looks awesome. Which one will give you the best deal, and are you trying to make your car into a showstopper? Both companies have decent/very good fitment and follow up service.

Legendary is hands down better.
By your writing I am not sure of which company carries the lifetime warranty? If it is PUI I need to send the door panels back. The Legendary products I have had no issues.

Now I know of some who have had okay luck with pui, but many have not.
If you have any issue with Leg. stuff, they will take care of it at their expense. Order through them directly and it will be even easier.
Fabric quality cannot be beat. So many people are fooled into thinking my whole interior is leather!
Watch for upcoming sales and deal. They have them around the holidays.

I know that they will have the right seat covers for Supremes and S models as they were designed from the factory. I have a dilemna though. I want to put in the A65 option in my Cutlass S (Supreme seat with center armrest) but I want it to match the stitching pattern for my car. Do you know if they do custom orders like that? If they don't I pretty much have to go to a local shop and hope for the best. Don't know how hard it is for the upholstery people to make the proper raised surfaces.
BTW your comment about people thinking naugahyde is leather is right on the money. I don't know how many times I've heard that at car shows. "ooooh look, this car has leather....."

You're going to spend alot more buying Legendary.
Source PUI from Tamraz and you'll get it cheaper by a few hundo.
PUI interior quality is great. I've got all new PUI interior in my 1970 442.
My only complaint is I think the shade of metallic green is possibly off or I got the wrong year shade.
Look at my door panels, and then the new PUI seat upholstery and you can see there's a shade difference.
Legendary is the new kid on the block making nice stuff.....nicer in some cases.
But the price is also reflecting that increase in quality most people won't notice.

Did you ask them to match PUI's (Year One's) price? I did and I paid about 5% more for Legendary. You can also wait until around x-mas. Year One runs their 20% special all the time Legendary runs a 15-20% either just before or just after x-mas.

I wish they would make Vista seat covers...
Yea, one would be surprised at how many "leather" seats in cars are not real leather. I work with a guy who had a late 80's/early 90s beemer and tried to get a rip in his seat repaired. Upholstery guy said he could not do as it was not real leather.
20 is typical. Free shipping is great. either way it is worth it. The biggest savings they offered was 30% that I remember - saw it only once tho...

Yes, it has the bench (A52) that it was born with. The tracks and seat are in incredible shape. The A65 seat has the power option which is why I bought it. The plastic around the armrest was all busted, but I got one off a 75 Toro that's identical and in mint shape - just have to paint it black. It's out in the shed right now pending upholstery.

I ordered my seat covers front and rear bench and ordered my headliner and door panels and sail panels from legendary. I'm having to wait on the carpet and package tray and trunk divider. I was wondering do I need to buy foam already shaped or would it be better to just buy foam from an upholstery shop or try to get a shop to redo them? I haven't ever done upholstery before.

Upholstery can be done yourself if you are good with tools and mechanical reasoning.
It is a bit complex. The front seat is the hardest, rear not bad.
For bench seats, just get bulk sheet foam in a medium density. Craft stores sell it.
Check out my interior makeover thread (link below) and that will let you know what you are getting int0...

they both sell the ACI brand seat buns which are the best available.
Making them yourself... Won't even be close.
Doing the recover yourself is not a big deal, just have the supplies and be willing to take it back apart a couple times to get it right. Take a lot of photos as they come apart so you can remember how they go together.
One of these days i need to do a write up with photos from the ones i do. I've got it down practically to a science now.
The teardown & spring reparirs are what take the longest.
Do yourself a favor and buy a couple sets of repop bottom side support springs. Weather your originals are broken or not. These get the most wear (from getting in and out of the car) and break the most often, and they are directly related to how the seat feels.

I have PUI and am very happy with it, but at the time Legendary was not around or I was unaware of them. So I can't say one's better than the other but based on all these responses I'd at least look into legendary - again my interior looks great.
One caveat with all these places the headrest covers just do not look right, you are better off finding good condition headrests and dyeing them rather than covering them if yours are in bad shape

However, the first set I got from them was defective, but they simply sent me a new set.
The bad ones were recycled into door pull strap covers!

How did yours turn out, maybe legendary cuts them in a pattern that is more conducive for fitting over the headrests

I bought my front bucket covers and rear seat covers thru Fusick. It is PUI and i do have experience recovering seats. Before ordering the seat covers, make sure the seat foams and springs are ok. If the springs are ok then you might as well replace the foams since everything is off. Changing the springs is a little challenge. Be careful of the seat frame. The edges are very sharp. Also, you might find your car's build sheet. I wasnt crazy about the headrest covers because it didnt look right. I just sprayed interior paint on it and it look a lot better.

The old covers were unstapled and removed and replaced. They did not seem vacuum formed.
Here is the original vs the incorrect one I first got:
Note the lack of piping...
And here is the correct one I got and installed myself in 20 minutes:
Not bad for a rookie...

On the headliner do you need to remove the windshields to install?
On my 70 Cutlass, i did mine with the windshield and the rear window on. Its a lot easier to do without the windows but if you dont feel like taking the windows out then leave it alone. I use the a lot of paper binders (medium size) that you can buy at Staples and yellow weatherstrip glue. You need a lot of patience to do this job. Make sure the bow clips and the roof insulation are in good condition.
