Prep for Plastic Parts like Kick Panels

Just wondering what ya'll are doing for preping plastic like Kick/Door Panels for 1978 Cutlass

Painting with SEM vinyl paint tried this before but after a few years the paint starting flaking off.

Going to strip of all old paint back to bare plastic but what have people been using for difficult to stick plastic parts

I'd like techniques and specific prep products used and your experience.

Thanks
Fred

Look on the SEM vinyl paint label and see what they say for prepping the surface.

Make sure you use an adhesion promoter. I used plastic rattle can paint I got at the hardware store with an adhesion promoter on my lower B pillar covers years ago and they still look decent.

Sorry, I don't remember the exact brands. My 71 98 isn't a concours restoration so it was just stuff I could get locally.

Follow the SEM procedures and you should be good. Thorough cleaning of the parts to remove Armor-all and other protectants is mandatory, then use the SEM wax and grease remover. After that dries, apply liberal coats of SEM adhesion promoter, and let stand for 5-10 minutes to soak in before applying the color coat. The adhesion promoter softens the plastic so the color coat can bond with the plastic part.

Stick with the same brand primer, adhesion promoter, and top coat.
