I am getting ready to install headliner,sail panels,package tray on a 1970 cutlass supreme! My question is there is a 2 1/2” space from package shelf to rear glass that isn’t covered. Is that area supposed to be painted or covered with headliner material? A pic of area in question!

 

That area would be painted in a matte finish. My 71 is black.

FYI..there should be two plastic pieces of trim in a similar design profile at each end and fastened with one screw each.

 

It should be covered with the mesh or vinyl (whichever one you selected) all the way back to the painted steel "hump" that serves as the rear window base. Pretty sure the rear window base would originally have been painted saddle on this particular Supreme I owned but that panel was replaced years ago.

Ok, 2 replies this far but both are opposites! As unfinished and rough as the surface is, I’m leaning towards the material covered! If it needs painted then I have to do more bodywork! Thanks for the replies!

 

Overall, I'm in agreement with Don71 - it's painted. Not sure how yours got so rough, I wasn't sure what I was looking at exactly - I thought your mesh tray cover wasn't deep enough or something. It should be a smooth metal piece running under the back window and it's painted, and it does have two plastic end caps like the saddle tan one laying on the package tray in my pic above.

I'll confirm what Terry is saying....that metal "hump" piece (lets call it the Rear Glass Cross Bar - RGCB) is NOT covered with any vinyl or other upholstery material. The factory painted that metal piece with a color based on the interior color for the car. The plastic corner pieces (ie - the "eggshells" - because they are a thin plastic) also got the same paint/color.

Paint it if your are aiming for a "stock" or "correct" appearance....that's 100% what the factory did.

 

I have a 70 Supreme hardtop. I have changed out my package tray many moons ago. I will agree that mine is painted a matte color blue, which is the same as the color of my interior.

The package tray actually goes under the rear glass crossbar almost 1/2 inch and on the corners are finished off by the two plastic end caps with 1 screw holding them down, Tim
