Great Carpet insulation

I went to Home Depot looking for carpet insulation. I found a product called Duct insulation ( Self Adhesive Foil and Foam) Made by Frost King. It looks to be perfect. It is 1/8th inch thick with a heat resistant side and self adhesive backing. It's 12" wide 18 feet long for about $18.00. It's a lot cheaper than regular car insulation I've found. Everyone but me probably knows about this, but just maybe it can help somone. Barb.

No it won't. That stuff is basically duct wrap and is all foil construction. Designed to wrap around hot air runs and plenums. It won't do much for sound insulation though.

Well the car had a rubber padding on the floor from the factory. I'm going to put this over that so it's not really touching the floor. So I'm thinking it should be OK as far as heat. Well I'll probably hear from someone who used it. Thanks Barb.

??? No 72 Cutlass came from the factory with rubber padding under the carpet. The carpets had a jute backing and that's all. Even if you bought a plain f85 or Cutlass coupe without carpet? It would be color keyed vinyl coated rubber upper and jute on the bottom. Sounds to me like a previous owner installed that rubber underlay for some reason.

Hmm, I was looking for something like this at Home Depot but I couldn't find it. I'll have to check again. If it's polyethylene, which I think it is, it shouldn't smell, and it should be great for it's size for sound and heat insulation.

Mike, I'm pretty sure this is what was bought in the 12" wide version

Similar product I used on my heating runs. Called 'Reflectix'. It works well to contain heat, but not noise.

Thanks Allan, I'll try to find some of that. The Reflectix product looks like it might be based on bubble wrap? I can see how one layer of bubbles could transmit more sound, versus the foam, where there are many layers of microscopic bubbles.

Mike - I just went down and looked at the Reflectix. It is exactly what you said - 2 layers of silver foil with a thin bubble wrap in between. It is a good thermal break. I used the silver aluminum tape to seal the joints, but you could just as easily use Tuck tape.

This Rubber I've seen on Ebay. There's like 5 pieces that fit most of the floor.
Check on Ebay you'll find it. Maybe it's not factory, but I think it will help with sound and heat. Found it on Ebay, Under Cutlass 442 under carpet sound deadner kit 1968 1972.

Barb, that is not a rubber product.
From their ad:
Die cut from the same heavy tar-based material as the original
It's also not as complete a deadening package as installing Fat Mat. I bought that package a number of years ago. It's heavy and dense, and I probably will end up using Fat Mat then gluing this stuff down to the Fat Mat for extra noise absorption.

OH, OK. I think it was factory installed on some cars in that time period. It's very dense and you're right it's probable not rubber, Just kind of looks like it. I'm putting it back in I'll put the Duct insulation over it. I think that will do the trick for sound.
Thanks Barb.

Good luck with the Reflectix install. Let us know how it works out.

In the past, I've used both types of Home Depot insulation (foil bubble wrap and the self adhesive duct wrap) on two projects. I laid the self adhesive stuff first to the floor boards than covered the whole floor and up the firewall with the bubble wrap stuff, than the juke than carpeting. I'll tell you that it made a world of difference on heat transfer as once installed, absolutely no heat came through the floors. It made a nice difference in noise dampening too.

I used the foil backed foam. It made the floor area a little cooler. Since I always drove the car with the windows down, it didn't make it any quieter. For the $18 investment, I'll do it again on the W-30.
