Glove box latch question 🤔

Lately I've been having trouble with the glove box fully latching on my '72 Supreme. Sometimes it won't fully latch unless I get the lock cylinder "just right."
I've also noticed that the entire lock cylinder turns when I try to close it, and dunno if that's how it's supposed to work.
I'm thinking I just may need to tighten the eustacheon, but wanted to get some thoughts/ideas/suggestions.

Had the same problem on a 70. The spring inside the latch housing had jumped off the detent and was binding inside the housing when the lock turned. It comes apart so you can clean and lube it slightly then put it back together if the spring is not broken. Very tedious job from what I remember. It took about 10 tries to get it lined up the right way. Works perfectly now so when I close the door the latch snaps right into position.
Best regards,
Eric

So when you close the door you shouldn't have to turn the lock cylinder...it should just latch on its own...is that right?

Is the entire assembly loose, as in does the latch portion move around? If so, the retaining nut needs to be tightened.

Yes it snaps to the key slot vertical position with only a small closing force on the door.

Yup...the whole latch portion turns when I spin the ****. If it's loose, do I tighten it in the "open" or "closed" position?

Right! You definitely need some thoughts/ideas/suggestions.. I don't think tightening up your eustacheon will help your car. But it may help an earache . I think you meant escutcheon.

Here's a picture of the glove box lock parts. The latch part goes on the inside of the door, and the lock ring goes on the outside of the door, so when the two are screwed together the latch is firmly secured to the door.
In order to tighten the lock ring, the key cylinder needs to be removed, which the link in the thread above describes.

Good pic. While you have the cylinder out look in the latch housing at the condition of the spring. If the hook on the spring is gone or bent it won't engage the leg on the end of the cylinder and there won't be spring tension to return the cylinder to vertical. Good luck.

I'm pushing the lock tab down but the cylinder isn't coming out...what am I missing and does the key need to be in or out?

Update
I got it...just had to give the cylinder a slight twist to free it up. Slid right out and an allen wrench to tighten the nut and I was good to go! Works like a champ now!

Thanks to all who helped!
