Glove box lock??

1969 Cutlass convertible. I think the spring in the glovebox lock has broken. Need to get it open to change out the heater core. Has anyone else had this happen what do I do??

I had the glove box lock fail on my '68 4-4-2 convertible. The way I got to it was to reach around under the dash to the back side. The actual box itself has an opening up by the latch. I was able to use a small screwdriver to depress the latch and open the glove box.

The reason my lock failed was because of the cast iron assembly on the backside of the glove box door that holds the lock cylinder. There is a spring-loaded cast iron lever inside of that piece and it broke. Fortunately, I had a spare backside assembly and I simply replaced the old, broken backside assembly with my spare.

Good luck with opening your glove box door. It takes a little patience and possibly a long arm!

Don't forget to lube stuff like that while you have it apart. Makes things work a lot smoother.

I don't know if they are the same, but on the full size cars all you have to do is unscrew the bezel around the lock and it drops inside the box and the door falls open.
