emblem barrel clips
trying to figure out which barrel nuts or clips to order for 442 emblems that go on fenders and trunk for 70-72?
Rather just drill and use the push in style fasteners, trunk emblems studs look different than fender emblems too.
much appreciate it if done it and have part#/link!

They used the ones that look like sheetmetal nuts, such as this (not a very good picture): They are called speednuts.
These are on ebay, from Inline Tube. There are other resources, as well.

When you say "aftermarket," do you mean the same style, but different finish? I came across the same thing in a "silvery" finish from a different retailer. Or do you mean a different shape altogether, such as the "receptacle" for the push-in style posts, as are found on the insides of doors where the inner panel connects to the door frame?

I see, now. Yes, the decklid numbers are attached with the push-in style insert barrels that Fun71 mentions. At least they do on my '68. However, the fenders use the speed-nuts. Some folks call them barrel-nuts.

DO NOT USE barrel nuts on the fender emblems without modifying the emblems first. You will have to grind out a small "moat" if you will, around the mounting post. Reason is, it's built into the hollow backed trunk emblems, but not the fender emblems. The barrel nuts have a flange that sticks up and would hold the flat backed fender emblem out from being flush on the fender. It will look stupid.
Otherwise, just use the speed nuts on the fender emblems. If the fenders are on the car, you can loosen the bottom of the fender, loosen the back of the inner fender and slide a small socket back up in there.

was thinking of doing it this way since fenders n trunk lid all in place, dont wanna use glue.. etc and didnt wanna mess around w loosing fenders, not sure if trunk lid is easily accessible for socket.
did you guys notice how the trunk emblem studs also look different? it has slit instead of grooves so may need diff kind speed nuts

Those you posted in the pic in Post #5 are the correct style for the decklid - Press the emblems into the retainers. The flange of the retainer should fit flat against the surface of the decklid. The fenders should have the speed-nuts screwed onto the back, inside the fender. Gravity Works, and you will eventually lose the emblems from the vertical surface of the fenders if you use the press-in retainers instead of the speed-nuts here. The engineers did it this way for a reason.

No speed nuts on trunklid emblems. They were designed for barrel nuts. Push n play. The OTC replacement trunk emblems used to come with new barrel nuts. Then it was hit and miss, then finally, just the emblem in the box.

The barrel nut goes into the deck lid first, then the emblem. There is a barb on the barrel nut that holds the nut into the sheet metal so that the emblem can be replaced . Putting the emblem on the nut first expands the nut not allowing it to bottom out in the sheet metal. Then push the emblem on firmly.

You notice some of the mounting pins have grooves. These were for a short piece of spring wire that, when the emblem was pushed into the barrel clip, expanded against it and helped retain it.

I use a thin strand of 3M 08578 black strip caulk around those posts for the push-in trunk numerals. It helps repel water and I find makes the emblem seat better than without the product. Just my 2-cents worth

The barrel clips from yesteryear that came in the pack with the trunk numeral used to have a little silicone seal on top of it. It was a green coated clip with a greenish gray seal IIRC. I got a pile of NOS emblems still in the box so I'll have to see if any of them came with barrel clips.
