Cleaning seatbelts

Need a little help- I know I have read some where in our forum about techniques for cleaning seat belts and some guy in California that refurbishes original seat belts back to new condition.
Any suggestions on cleaning or redirect me...It is amazing how bad old seat belts look comapred to a new interior....
Seems like someone said they put them in your dish washer? Seems like that would not be good for the metal parts, especial the auto retract system??
Thanks

I think some laundry detergent like Tide, would do a good job. A bucket of hot water and a scrub brush would do wonders. I'd much rather do this job by hand, were talking seat belts here, so safety is a concern.

I think the dishwasher would be harsh, wouldn't want to leave them in a hot enviroment like the dry cycle. But i bet its been done.

Likewise the washing machine, would probably work. Maybe put them in a pillow case with some shop towels for cushion.

I also think that cleaners like Super Clean, Simple Green and dishwasher products might work in spots, but don't soak them long. There no telling what products like these might to the fabric.

Soaking in Woolite is probably the best, but I have cleaned some nicely with a couple squirts of dishwashing soap in a buck of hot water.
