Changing color of sport steering wheel

I have an original sport steering wheel in excellent condition. The problem is the fabric is blue. Is there a cost effective way to change it to a black color? How does it stand up to use if its dyed or painted?

Thanks

I'd bet it's a starfire wheel. If it were me I'd be looking for someone that would be interested in the blue wheel and find yourself a black one. There are plenty of them out there to be had.

You can use dye but it will probably come off all the time. My father; Oldsguy, put a sport steering wheel in his 69 Delta 88 that was originally tan. He used a black dye on it and we soon found out that the dye would slowly wear off on your hands and anything else that brushed against the steering wheel. Plus, once the dye started to wear off the original tan color started to peek through.

I tried dying a maroon one black for my 72 Cutlass. As Olds64 said, it started wearing off in a few months. This was years ago so I put one of those soft grip steering wheel wraps on it. I don't know if they even make those anymore since most steering wheels are padded. This grip was one of the ones that lace on and not the kind you see now that just slip over the steering wheel.
