Butyl tape/rope for splash shields

Looking for recommendations on what brand/type of butyl to use to attach the splash sheilds - rope, flat? It looks like the original was a rope, about 1/4" diameter. Car in question is a '71 Vista Cruiser. Thanks!

If you are talking about the door water shields that go behind the door panels, I would suggest 3M strip-caulk.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. I like the 3M products in general, I see the OD of this is about 1/4" whereas other butyl rope is typically 3/8". Not sure it matters a whole lot though...

Late to the party.

I’ve worked with this good product for a decade or so. It’s crazy messy & sticks to everything, just like it should. I try not to touch the stuff without disposable gloves. It gets everywhere and is very tough to wash out, unless you use serious VOC solvents. Warmly suggest that if you’re using this stuff in quantity, use disposable clothes too.

Change before you put the interior back in…

What may help someone along the way is that this stuff is heat sensitive. If you warm it up with a heat gun or maybe in a hot glue pot you can spread it like cake icing. This is a very good replacment for the gray colored mastic that GM used back in the day, which was probably also heat sensitive itself.

My experience thus far is putting a bead down on a piece of stainless, then heating with a heat gun. But that can burn your fingers pretty quick. I’ll let you know if the glue pot thing works better.

Great stuff tho…

Cheers
Chris
