Ash tray color?

So one of our members has a repro Ash tray for sale here on CO for a 70-72 A body. I noticed that it is black. My 72 Supreme has the original and it's kind of a grayish color. Should I paint it Black?

The ones in both of my cars were a greyish metal color. Well, actually the one in the vert was mostly rust color.

Got it...so I'll just clean mine up and call it a day. Any idea why the repro is black?

So does it depend on the build plant?

I was curious as my car is a Lansing build as well, so I went out to the garage and pulled the ash tray. It is bright shiny silver everywhere except the inner well part, which has a coat of surface rust on it, but appears that it was originally the same bright shiny finish. I will say that I have no idea if it is the original as I did not own the car since new - I bought it when it was 19 years old.

Can't speak to the plant choices or Kenneth's ashtray. I know mine is original and it's black. Tell ya what. The All OLDS show at Olds AB is happening in July. I'll try to remember to look at the selection of 70-72 ashtrays....

I think only 72 was black. 70-71 was some sort of metallic silver plating.

That's what I understand to be true. I've also seen a kind of olive drab color on these as well. I just knew mine was supposed to be the shiny silver plated one since I have a '70.

Dave, it's a relatively unseen part of the car. If it's not hurting anything, just leave as is. But, knowing you would like to paint it, that works too
