70 cruise stalk repair

Has anyone ever taken apart the cruise control stalk from a 1966-76
Oldsmobile. The 66-70 are the chrome fluted design and the 71 up are
all chrome with a black plastic tip. What I would like to do is take
the fluted end off of one stem and put it on a newer stem that is in
better condition. I am not sure if these tips are threaded on,
pressed on or glued on.

The fluted part is plastic. It may have been molded onto the metal stalk during the manufacturing process...not sure. I've pulled and tugged on one of these before to no avail. You could try soaking it in hot water, etc but my guess is they injected the molten plastic onto the stalks.

I may try to find a real bad one and go after it with end cutters to see how it's held on. Will try to find a junk one this week.
