70-72 Cutlass console - custom solid top plate?
70-72 Cutlass console - custom solid top plate?
has anyone here seen a 70-72 Cutlass automatic console where the top plate was replaced with a custom solid top that didn't have the shifter opening?
I just installed factory buckets in my column shift ragtop and think it would cool to install a factory console with a solid top plate - I assume something could be machined maybe out of thin metal plate and covered in woodgrain overlay?
Not looking to convert to full-on floor shift anytime soon but would avoid making any permanent mods to the console that would prevent me from doing so later if ambition and $$ permitted

Not in those years, but Olds actually did this from the factory on one very obscure option combo. In 1967, you could get the column shifted three speed manual in the Delta Custom that came with bucket seats. Olds used the 67-69 style AT console, but the die cast plate where the shifter normally goes was blanked off. You could probably count the number of cars built this way on one hand. This is shown in the full size car PIM for 1967.
I may have found a reproduction source whom does a lot of Cutlass console resto work - they say they actually have a reproduced solid top plate available along with the proper wood grain overlays for 70-72.

What's wrong with this picture? They make the solid plate and then cut it to suit either of the stick or auto options. But they can't sell an uncut plate? I considered that greedy and a disservice to the car community. You can guess what my answer was.
H&H is the source I am ultimately going with, as they can make the bezel and fit it with the correct woodgrain overlay. It's being made for me at this writing so I'll post photos of it when received
