‘68 Defrost Vent- What’s this?

Hello Everyone, I’m putting the missing drivers side defrost vent back in on my ‘68 442, and having trouble. This is a picture through the speedometer hole. What’s this gray, hard, molded plastic stuff there for? It seems like there’s too much of it and it’s making it impossible to get both the top tabs and screw tabs lined up. Thanks

I've not run into anything like this before. But it's about the right location for the window channel. Could it be some kind of filler a previous owner used to repair a rusted out windshield channel?

Now that’s a thought. Not a happy one, but it would explain a little weirdness in the front left corner of the windshield. I’m thinking I’d like to grind out the excess that’s causing the problem.

If you are talking about the stuff that has a slight overspray of body color paint on it then it looks like a firewall insulation pad to me. Do you think you could cut it with a strong utility blade? That might do the trick.

Hey Dan, thanks for your message. It’s a real hard epoxy type filler of some kind. It wouldn’t flex, break or bend. I used a dremel with a flexible attachment to cut and grind it out.
