1972 Convertible Trunk Mat

I purchased a replacement trunk mat for my 1972 convertible from REM/Fusicks. It arrived and doesnt look anything like my original. Original mat is grey and more fiber like(not smooth). The REM is greenish color and smooth. Was the original more grey looking or is mine just wore out? Were they smooth or more felt like? OPGI mat picture looks more grey even though they call it green/grey. What should it look like and does anyone make one that looks like the original? Comparison photo.

To my knowledge there are no replacements like the original mats. Nothing even close that I have found.

I think the felt lined ones were aftermarket/repop. My recollection is that the factory trunk mats were heavy rubber and problematic for being moisture traps.

I think this is the mat that your speaking of. This was an accessory mat that was sold by the dealer and not the liner that covered the trunk pan. I removed the original mat in my 71 Cutlass and it was a felt type material.

The OP isn't referring to the optional add-on rubber mat. He's asking about the standard mat that came in all the Cutlass's and 442's.

No, that's not what I was talking about. I meant a rubber mat that was cut along the same contours as the felt one described. I have distinct memories of peeling one off the trunk floor of a '65 Skylark and finding orange water pooled in the recesses -- that is, where it hadn't already drained out the holes that had developed there.

Trunk mat

Ok, yes the earlier cars did have that heavier mat, a printed hounds tooth design, I think by 70 they were a felt type material

Exactly. Didn't know when they made the change.
