I'm looking to restore a center console, I need some advice on paint selection and prepping the console. The console is brown in color and I want to paint it black. Any advice would on the console would be much appreciated.

 

For hard plastic parts I used SEM vinyl paint. Clean the parts very well to remove all dirt, grease, and oils, then spray them with light coats.

X3 on the SEM, however, you MUST get the plastic completely clean. Use a toothbrush or similar brush to scour the grain in the plastic. Once dry, use the SEM prep solvent before painting.

 

Thanks for the advice, what type of black paint shoul I use semi gloss, or glossy.

Thanks for the info it saves a lot of unnessary experimental work. What should I do with the metal moulding that wraps around the console, it looks like the tabs slide through then are bent to hold it in place. Can tha metal be polished ?

 

I think that aluminum price is anodized, it can be removed and re installed if your careful

 

I am restoring one converting it to a 4 speed. I removed that trim pice and sanded the plating off with 320. Then in worked finer 400,600,800,1500,2000 grit. Then rubbed it out with mothers and it looks perfect.
