1970's navigation system

I failed hard yesterday trying to update the maps on my 70's navigation system left of my radio:

Is this compass a factory installed option or is it aftermarket? I seem to recall I've seen it in a few cars but I'm not sure if it is just a 70s/80s "I got it too" trend. Can anyone provide me with some info on this?

And, as my head is just too big, does anybody know how it's fastened to the dash? If OEM, is there a clip on the rear?

I'd like to replace it with an USB jack with a cap I made out of a piece of the burled wood imitate I have left from my instrument cluster to hide it.

And even as it's lacking the fluid inside I don't really want to destroy it.

Looks like someone shoved a globe compass into the cig lighter.

Aftermarket, maybe stick a small mirror in the radio hole & shine a light in there to see how it is attached?

Checked again and now it's clear to me:

The hole around the compass did not look like a hack job. The solution: It's the original hole of the left radio button, the globe was really just stuck in there.

Originally I thought the hole was to the left of the radio and there had to be something in there from the factory

The cigarette lighter is on the second floor, above at the ash tray, btw.
