1968 Cutlass speedometer R&R

so I want to replace the speedometer with a floor shift version in my 68 Vista Cruiser which I've converted to bucket seats.. I know how to take it out once I get to it, my question is how do I get to it and access it. Looks to me like dropping the steering column will not help all that much.

Any pointers thanks.

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do this. You need to get up under the dash and remove the screws that hold the pod to the dash pad. Removing the front seat so you can lie flat on the floor makes it suck slightly less. When I was much younger, I spent a lot of time with my head under the dash and my legs draped over the seatback. It hurts to even think about that these days.

^^^^What he said. Seat out, one arm up each side of the steering column, 1/4" combination wrench. Small flash light, not a large trouble light.

X3 on leaving the seats out it will provide much easier access. Get an assembly manual. You will need to modify the neutral safety system. Ill assume you are installing a console...if you are converting to a floor shift speedo. The console floor brackets are reproduced.

Yeah I've already converted the car to bucket seats on a console I was just wondering if dropping the column would help but it doesn't appear that it will

Dont remember having to drop the column but maybe loosening it at the dash bolts to access things? Youll figure it out once you done the deep dash dive.
