It's finally happened! I found my dream car!!!
In the late '80's I realized that every time I'd look through a classic car magazine, or look through a classic car trader, or through a Hemmings, it was always the '72 Hurst/Olds that would make me say "that's sweet!". Well it took me around a 1/4 of a century but I got it. I'm now the proud owner of a beautiful '72 Hurst/Olds! It's in very nice condition, including a working sunroof. It needs some help, which it will receive, but it's resting comfortably in my garage now for 2 days. Just thought I'd share this info with others who might like to know that, in the words of a Moody Blues song, "no dream is ever lost if you never cease to try". Scott in Connecticut

Thank you so much Barry. I've had a picture of a '72H/O adorned just like this one with the sunroof and only the Indy wings on it (no lettering) for years. I see it every day and always hoped to find one just like it someday. It's hard to believe that one just like it is now in my possession.
Thanks very much, it is exciting. Hey, I need amongst other things, the trumpet exhaust tips. I see Brothers, Fusicks and The Parts Place has them. Is there one product that's better than the other? Is one of these businesses better than the others? Is this something that's ok to be discussed here? Sorry, new at this!
Hi Scott! The Prize has come home I see.
Good to see your baby resting comfortably in the garage there. It's such a gorgeous car and I know you were taken with it pretty much the first time you saw it. Like we talked about - it's really hard to fake a 72 HO with a factory sun roof!
I just know you're itching to get it out and drive it some more. Look after any issues first and then show it off to the world! (Well as much of CT as you want). I know the guys here will be interested in your car and some more pics.
re: Parts Vendors? Personally I'd avoid Brothers - they have a generally poor reputuation as reviewed by members of this site. Here's a link to a thread that discusses vendors. Lately Parts Place has been rated as overall weak in customer service, while Fusicks has decent parts, good service but high shipping costs. There are so many vendors to choose from nowadays.
re: Posting pics? No problem my friend. Here's a link on How to Post Pictures. BTW, the max using CO as the host server is 5 per post. If you have a cloud account you can load up to 20. Only catch is if you break the IMG URL to your host server (like deleting or moving it anywhere on the host server) the image will disappear from here too. If you run into any problems you have my home contact and I'll do my best to help.

Hey guys, I've had my car 1 day short of a week and I just got a chance to go through it a bit with a better qualified mechanic and I've got some questions.
The correct GA heads are on the car and the block is matching to the car also. Please take a look at the following picture of this manifold. This is on the driver's side and should be a W, correct? The one on the pass. side has a Z on it. What do you figure this one is from?
The carb is # 7041251RC1321 which is from a '71 Cutlass correct? We had a bit of a stalling problem but after adjusting a bit, it's much better. Aside from being the incorrect carb, I'm ok running with this, right?
The car doesn't have any gauges, just the warning lights. I'm concerned about overheating. When does the hot light come on, when it's too late? Is every car different? For instance, when you're low on gas with today's cars one car will go 30 miles before running out and another maybe 20?

Also, I need to paint the openings of the scoops black. I've seen some painted on the inner sides of the scoops and some not. Opinions please or is there documentation? Could use some close up pics of exactly where to paint and what paint to use. Thanks so much guys!

Scott,
The W/Z manifolds are correct for your HO and the Z manifold is the right side. . Something fishy going on there. What is the casting number on the Z manifold?
7042151 is indeed a 1971 QJet from a 1971 455. You may want to check the metering jets and see if they are the same for the 72 specs on your car.
455's were notorious for overheating (mostly idling in traffic and low speed operation). That's why Olds designed and provided the radiator overflow container for it. The overflow was a free dealer installed goody anyone could get just by asking for it. If your car doesn't have an overflow, I would seriously think about getting one of the repro's and installing it. I have 2 of the OEM ones, one is in my car. The other isn't good enough for your car though. The other thing to look at is whether the TCS is hooked up and operating properly. Double check your vacuum lines to make sure they're not leaking. Replace any that are suspect.
Gauges? Yes. I'd definitely go with gages. Check out Parts Place and consider the Rallye Pack U21 option gages they sell. There are some tips on brightening them for night operation, but overall they look the same as OEM. Only way to tell the repro from OEM is looking at the clock - it's quartz and doesn't have a sweep second hand. Parts Place offers the best price on the U21 option considering all the other vendors that sell exactly the same part. I know you want it to look original. Generally the hot light will come on around 230°.

W 402295 LH
1969-72 442, W-30, H/O, A-body with big block and dual exhaust. "W" is over the front runner. THE most desirable set to have. Has divider between center ports. One 2.5" outlet, 2-bolt flange, points about straight down. Companion to Z-402294-RH.

Allan I can't see a # on the z manifold but here's a pic.
The car doesn't have the overflow tank but it will
I thought about adding gauges but I didn't want the under dash ones. I'll look into the u21's. Would love to add those and I think I gotta have the sport steering wheel. Man I'm loving this!

Noooo, don't put under dash gages on that car!! It's way too nice to spoil like that. If you want more info on the RP gages, LMK and I'll send you an email to your home address.
Can't remember if you have the 72 Chassis Service Manual? If you don't, this would be a good time to buy one. Don't get the cheesy e copy or repros. Their scans are horrible. Get a good used OEM one - it may cost more or be worse for wear but has the best illustrations, and the electrical schematic is in color.
The overflow tank is about 200.00 just about everywhere.
The N34 Sport steering wheel? Absolutely! A must have for a killer car like that!
The picture of the exhaust manifold you just posted is confusing me. That side (left, or driver side) is supposed to be a W manifold.
Your air cleaner snorkel is on the wrong side - should be on the passenger side and there should be a heat riser tube that comes up off the manifold to the bottom inlet of the Thermac valve. It was part of the cold starting system to prevent icing in the carb on really cold days. See section 6-1, page 138 of the Cutlass Assembly Manual for details.
Let's get rid of that clamped water line and get the proper one on there too. I know it was cut so one of the PO could do a back flush, but it detracts from the originality of the car.

Welcome to the site Scott! A '72 H/O is on a short list of my dream Oldsmobiles (I'd really like 1 with Pace Car writing on doors). Love the reflective striping and a working moonroof(WOW!)...awesome! Best of luck with it, it's beautiful!!
By the way...I just put on a set of trumpet tips I got from Fusick on my '70 last night. Says "Made in China" all over the wrapping but they fit and look nice. I like Fusick. They're actually located in East Windsor, CT but I don't believe they have a store location open to the public.

As far as the driver side manifold, it looks like one from a 350 engine. I'd bet that the correct original one cracked at some point & was replaced with what was easiest to find??
Gorgeous car, congrats!!
Gorgeous car, congrats!!
oldsman72 and oldspackrat thank you both very much. The car was a long time dream and its great knowing it's now reality. Oldsman72 I was hoping to be able to save on shipping by taking the 45min to 1 hour drive to Fusicks. Guess I'll call them and see if they have counter service. I figure the same oldspackrat, one day I'll get the correct manifold on there.
Welcome to the forum. That's is a beautiful H/O. Congrats on finding your dream car!

Scott? I don't think the sbo and bbo exhaust manifolds are compatible. If they were everyone would convert their sbo to the W/Z dual exhausts.
Allan,
If I remember right you can put the driver side 455 manifold on a 350 but if you put that 455 manifold on the passenger side of a 350 it hits the oil filter or the oil filter housing? But I believe you can put the 350 manifold on a 455 with no problem? Not 100% sure on this info though.

Hey guys, I'm in Ansonia, which is in the section of Connecticut referred to as "The Valley". I did buy the car locally pogo69, are you familiar with it?
Hey 76 Regency, I would absolutely love to bring this car to the Olds show in September. Save me a spot, I'll be there, especially if I can get this leaky manifold worked out :-) Speaking of which...
